HASH(0x99e2dd8c) out of 5 stars For me, a really helpful aid 9 Jan. 2013

I have renewed my study of Japanese independently after 3 years classroom study many years ago. This time I'm focusing just on speech competency (at 67 I don't have enough years left to become literate in Japanese, and I want to be able to function in day-to-day Japan). This limits the usefulness of many self-teaching language programs, which integrate reading and writing into their approach, so I have been hopping around among various offerings, all of which emphasize different structures and vocabulary. This book has helped greatly to organize and categorize the various sentence patterns I have encountered. I am probably at intermediate level of competency at present, and I find the book suits me perfectly. I doubt it would work for someone who does not already have a background in Japanese grammar. It is written in romaji as well as Japanese, so I am able to use it without being able to read kanji and kana.

HASH(0x9af76af8) out of 5 stars Great book for any beginner 5 Jan. 2013

This book is for someone between the absolute beginner and an intermediate student of Japanese. Your options for the sentence patterns are given in Romaji or Kanji. There are no kana only sentences, though a serious student should be trying to learn Kanji anyways, and the romaji gives you the readings fine.

Personally I use this book to put sentences into the free digital flashcard system called Anki. I don't necessarily use it for it's initial purpose, which is to figure out how to state or reply to a specific sentence pattern. I think it works great as a resource of Japanese sentences to memorize.

HASH(0x9a70acc0) out of 5 stars Worth your money. I have some other suggestions if you're serious about learning Japanese. 28 Feb. 2015

For anyone learning Japanese, it is ESSENTIAL to get the most you can out of what is offered. If you have Genki or Tobira or any textbook, you will eventually come to the conclusion that while they get you started, you are still lacking skills in that language. So what can you do? Pick up Japanese Sentence Patterns for Effective Communication.

Unfortunately, this includes romaji right underneath the kana, so if you're trying to break away from that habit, you're going to have a difficult time unless you either cover up the romaji or black them out. If you are going to Japan and have no knowledge of the language, then this is basically your Bible. Take it with you!! Textbooks tend to cover the "polite" form of Japanese, which is nice but when that's all you know, your'e not going to be able to really voice your thoughts on something. This book definitely clears this up. I've had this for about a month now, and already I feel more polished in Japanese.

What else can you get to improve your skills? Japanese Graded Readers. I have a review for this, and honestly, they have been extremely helpful! You are given a chipboard box with little books that are in color and written in Japanese. The difficulty goes up with each level and each set comes with a CD so you can follow along with the native Japanese reader. You can also pick up what are considered some of the best manga for beginners: Yotsuba, Shirokuma Cafe, and Chi's Sweet Home. Granted, as easy as they are, this will still be difficult for non-native Japanese. You probably won't get most of it right away, but don't let that deter you! You can do it!

What if you don't care for learning from manga? Try a novel by Yoshimoto Banana like "High and Dry" or pick up a picture book from a Studio Ghibli movie. I got Howl's Moving Castle in Japanese and it's a steep learning curve, but definitely helpful.

This book is great for filling in the gaps left by other learning methods. I know a lot of words in Japanese, but this helps put them all together correctly.

I love this book so much! It has so many sentence patterns and is just what I need to get out from the beginner stage and into the intermediate level of Japanese. This is one of the best things I could ever get to learn Japanese. It's perfect. :)
