Fantastic. January is not just a book containing sex, it's more. (50 Shades, read all of them, and enjoyed each one). This is much more, it has lots of sex in it yes, but it's a beautiful story about Mia sorting her life out. Mia is a lovely caring person who has had a hard time, she is now working for her auntie as a very highly paid escort, plan, to pay off her fathers debts. Mia's aunt has worked out it should take a year to be free and clear of her fathers debts who is in hospital on life support. Dreading this new experience, her first assignment is gorgeous Character called Wes, I won't tell you any more except during January there friendship grows as they both know they must not get emotionally envolved. I looked through some of the ratings and had one comment, you can't skip through his book to get to the end, you will read very word and when finished immediately buy February.

OK, so I'm a man and Ms Carlan's 'Calendar Girl' series almost certainly won't have been written with the male reader in mind, and, as such, you may very well think I have no right to offer comment. If you do feel that way then please ignore what I am about to say. If you are interested, however...

The good points:

The book cover is quite pretty.

The bad points:

The characters are soulless, emotionless, cardboard-cutout cliches. The sex is neither passionate nor erotic and the prose during such scenes is often painfully cringeworthy.

People - ladies! If you want to be turned on by a book then go read some quality erotica - there's lots of it out there with a storyline and everything! If you want to lose yourself in a good, old fashioned romance then do yourself a favour and find a story where the characters display emotion beyond finding each other really, reeeeeally hot.

I'm afraid this book had me coming away thinking that E L James is a literary genius!

Before I go, and I don't know why I feel the need to do this, but I will defend Ms Carlan against one recurring criticism in the reviews below that says her books are too short for the money (thank goodness January did come to the end soon enough - like the miserable, grey month of the tax bill itself, I couldn't wait for it to be over). Stop being so damn tight! You'll happily spend £2.50 on a crappy coffee from Starbucks, but you think £1.99 for a book that has taken weeks if not months for an author to write, and that - in theory at least - will keep you entertained for hours on end... Sigh*

Mia is in her early 20’s sexy and beautiful. But she needs 1,000,000 dollars fast. Her father’s gambling debts mean he, Mia and her younger sister aren’t safe until it’s paid off. She will have to ask Aunty Millie for help…

This is funny, sexy and a light quick easy read. It’s just over a hundred pages long and once you start it’s hard to stop. Aunty Millie runs Exquisite Escort agency and Mia has no choice but to work for her. Her January job is for wealthy Weston Charles Channing III and the contract is for 24 days and 100,000 dollars, sex not included or expected. When they meet he is incredible attractive and Mia finds herself in an unexpected whirlwind of fun and luxury. She’s soon wondering if she ever wants to leave him and take next month’s booking…

This is enjoyable stuff for adults from author Audrey Carlan and certainly kept me amused. I look forward to reading Mia’s February’s adventure as she monthly attempts to pay back the debt. A good start to this fun and sexy series which we can follow over the coming year.

It’s really simple. This is just not that great.

To be fair to the author I actually liked the characters at the very start of the book, other than some questionable life choices it seemed that Mia had some balls about her and when I was first introduced to her January client, Wes, I thought ok, I can get on board with this, this guy seems alright.

Sadly as soon as they got together both characters really started to disappoint me to the point that I couldn’t wait for the book to end, holding out hope that something miraculous would happened to turn it around.

Both characters are insipid and lack any real depth of connection with each other. The original sign of chemistry – right at the beginning when Mia met Wes – evaporated quickly when the storyline basically descended into poorly written sex scene after sex scene. The main hangup I have about the storyline itself is that Mia’s only option to make some money is to sell herself, and then repeat that another 11 times, I mean she lives in Vegas and if I’m not mistaken there is more than one giant casino there right? She couldn’t have tried that first? And as for Wes, getting an escort because his mummy wants him to, I can’t even.

It’s wishy-washy and amateur and to that end I won’t be reading the rest of the series just to see how this ultimately ends up because it looks to me like just another 11 version of the same story are in store.
