I bought this primarily for the third of Bach's Gamba Sonatas, for which there was not room on the Mercury double CD of the six cello suites which used the first two gamba sonatas [all three are played on the cello with piano accompaniment by Gyorgy Sebok] as fillers.
But there is much else here - the rest of it by Italian composers of the 17th and 18th centuries - to delight the ear; admirers of Starker and the 'cello in general will not be disappointed. The pianist in all these works is Stephen Swedish. To mention just one piece, the Allegro from Boccherini's A major suite has a second subject which bears such an uncanny resemblance to Howard Goodall's theme for the TV series 'Blackadder' as to suggest plaigiarism.

HASH(0x91a2dd14) out of 5 stars Superb Starker 28 April 2001
By Michael Brad Richman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This collection of Italian Cello Sonatas by the great Janos Starker is one of the most delightful chamber albums I own. The world renowned cellist was joined on this 1966 recording by pianist Stephen Swedish on five of the selections, and by his frequent collaborator Gyorgy Sebok on the Bach Sonata in G minor, which was recorded in 1963 and added to this collection to increase its length (it is a welcome addition musically too). The selections here range from famous composers like Bach, Boccherini and Vivaldi, to the lesser known Corelli, Locatelli and Valentini. For me, the common thread of this recording is the passionate performances of Starker. Whether it is the happy bounce of the Vivaldi Allegro, the sublime rendering of the Boccherini Adagio, or the precise interplay with Sebok on the Bach Sonata, Starker plays masterfully and his cello is captured in rich, full sound by the Mercury Living Presence recording technique. This is an excellent purchase for all cello enthusiasts.

HASH(0x91a2dd74) out of 5 stars Absolutely Exquisite! 5 Oct. 2006
By David Emberson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This is a fabulous recording! The music and musicianship are superb. The Vivaldi is soulful and the Locatelli and Valentini sonatas are virtuoso pieces wonderfully played. The third Bach sonata was placed on this CD because it did not fit on the Mercury set with the Bach suites. It is a bit of a change of pace (certainly not an Italian cello sonata!). But Sebok is perhaps the best of Starker's collaborators. Their lifelong friendship and shared musical tastes make this one of the best recordings of this Bach sonata. You have to own this CD if you already own the Mercury edition of the Bach solo suites with the other two Bach sonatas.

I am not sure what the "one star" reviewer was thinking. Perhaps he was expecting Baroque a la Jacqueline DuPre...

HASH(0x91a301c8) out of 5 stars Superb modern performance of Baroque works. 19 Mar. 2011

I bought this CD in part because I purchased the music "Italian Cello Music" which is mostly covered by this CD. I like to hear professional recordings of music that I embark on so that I have a reference point for study. Janos Starker is also a 20th Century icon for the cello both as a performer and as a teacher. I can say that I was very pleasantly surprised with this recording. Many new recordings try to capture the essence of a period performance; harpsichord with cello continuo and of course recorded in an old Italian church walking distance from where the instrument was probably built! Mr. Starker takes a more modern approach and gives a wonderful performance. This may have been recorded in the early 1960's but the sound quality is excellent. This is a very worthwhile CD and one that should provide much listening enjoyment.
HASH(0x91a301b0) out of 5 stars Great performance from Janos Starker. 9 Dec. 2013

Love Janos Starker's playing, didn't love the piano accompaniment. As other reviewers have stated, this is definitely a more "modern" take on the selected music. I thought Janos Starker's performances on these tracks were spellbinding, but to me - the piano accompaniment was garish and really took away from the simplistic beauty of the pieces, and from Mr. Starker's playing. Personally, I really wish there was the opportunity to hear what this would have sounded like if it were a more traditional recording. Ah well...
