I grew up with these books and I am delighted to see them back in print. Although, we live in completely different times to when they were first published there is something utterly enchanting about them. Looking at them is like re-visting your childhood, a time when life seemed more simple.

I wouldn't use a basal reading program to teach reading - I'm of the phonics school - but I really liked this book. Like most basal readers it has a list of words in the back, and I was about to write this off as old-fashioned when I realised it was fully decodable and clear, and he knew all the words. So it was actually quite motivating, and clear, using high frequency words in simple sentences for practice.
Recommended - particularly for the very early reader who will be motivated by the fact they read a "big book". Liked its innocence too, a lot of the reading program books now seem to have different values, people are always getting in trouble or laughs at other's expense. I've learned to watch out for ideology!

In this book children are children.

It is actually refreshing reading this book once again. I learned how to read with this book back in primary school in Nigeria...I doubt books of the Janet and John Quality are made these days. It's a shame that the books is classed as humour!!!

I did research at postgraduate level,(4years)on children who read early.I then taught from infants through juniors and also supposedly 'backward'children.I knew which basic 'readers' were available but it did not take long to discover that the Janet and John Series outmatched all competing texts. The grading of these readers is unsurpassed and children made rapid progress using them, whilst enjoying their success as well as the storyline. But most of all they enjoyed their success in mastering the basic skill of learning to decode the written word and becomming competent readers. It is my firm believe, born of experience, that it is the careful grading of these books which gave children a comparitively easy road to success in mastering this vital skill. The so called 'backward' readers I also taught (excluding two children in as class of 15),caught up and surpassed their peers and were able to return to their normal classes within a year. I cannot speak too highly of these 'readers'. Their authors besides using logic and commonsense in grading the Janet and John Series must have been gifted intuitively in their careful grading and introduction of the written word, or maybe it was just a labour of love. Whichever, countless children owe a debt to these authors and the inspired introductory 'readers' which they created .A.Murphy.B.Sc.(Econ); Postgraduate Psychology.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that this precious and very effective reading resource has now been categorised as 'Humour'.
My generation was taught to read through the pages of Janet and John and their associated story books. By the time I was eight I was reading Enid Blyton's Brer Rabbit stories and also Just Like Jennings. As a university graduate in English grammar I owe the origin of my reading AND spelling skills to Janet and John. Sad to find that this invaluable learning source is now regarded (probably by the humourless and paranoid 'politically correct' brigade) as 'Humour').

Brought back fond memories. Grand daughter learning to read and she found it interesting. Also helps grown ups (me) where the child is with in recognising various words. I will definitely buy her more of these. She also liked the illustrations, simple and uncomplicated and also relevant today except for the style of clothes.

Yes, it's old fashioned but the simple repetition is rewarding for a beginner reader. Too many books aimed at new readers actually have far too many difficult words in them. There's a list of words at the back so it's easy to check whether they've actually been learnt or whether your bright child is just remembering them by looking at the picture! It's nostalgic too for us grandparents who learnt to read with Janet & John. I bought both 'Off to Play' and 'Here we Go'
