jane eyre faces a tough childhood when her parents die and she is forced into the care of relatives who neither want nor care for her.
she is sent away to a charity school to which she is abandoned again. surviving the tough regime she grows up to teach at the school and then takes up a position as governess to a young french girl in the north of england who is the ward of mr rochester.
mr rochester is older, ugly and embittered by what life has thrown at him
but he sees his salvation in jane and plans to marry her
but mr rochester has a secret in the attic he hasnt told his love about.....
this version of the charlotte bronte novel is absolutely true to the book in spirit but not in detail of plot.
a number of scenes have been left out, but having seen the william hurt version where they are included , i believe that they are bits which, though adding to understanding do not add to the pace and passion of the plot.
i found that after the initial viewing the scenes i wanted to watch repeatedly were those between ms morton and mr hinds....i found them mesmerising....and the ones i fast forwarded to get to them would never have included the ones they left out
ciaran plays the most wonderful passionate mr rochester...morton a delightful yet restrained jane...
you will love it
The whole adaptation is wonderful - all the casting and acting were deliciously good so much nicer than watching actors 'act'. Instead it is one of those shows you can lose yourself in the romance and drama of.
Gorgeous gorgeous...the whole thing is a delight and one i will return to watch again and again over the years.
None of the other adaptations come close to this superb quality.

As played by the greatly critically praised British actress Samantha Morton (IN AMERICA), she survives a troubled childhood to become governess to a young French girl at Thornfield Hall. But the gloomy place is haunted by secrets, which complicate Jane's growing passion for her mysterious, brooding, and worldly employer, Mr. Rochester, as played by Ciaran Hinds, (GAME OF THRONES). As was typical of British TV production at the time, the entertainment is star-studded, boasting the participation of Gemma Jones played Mrs. Fairfax and Rupert Penry-Jones playing St. John Rivers. among others. The acting is strong; the costumes are rich, and the locations, spectacular.
Of course, ever since 1847, the problem of the madwoman in the attic, Mrs. Rochester, has been dismaying feminists and proto-feminists. The first Mrs. Rochester is more to be pitied than to be hated, but she stands in the way of Jane Eyre's happiness. Jean Rhys's greatly praised novel WIDE SARGASSO SEA, which focuses on the first Mrs.Read more ›
