Review

"If Lisbeth Sallander took a a lesson in female empancipation from Tura Satana, she would maybe have ended up something like Jezebel, the flint-assed, funny and endearingly fallible lead in Danny Hogan's fable for our times" --Cathi Unsworth author of The Not Knowing, The Singer and Bad Penny Blues

"Good characters, nice sense of place. A lively, fun, pulpy romp"
--Alan Guthrie author of Bye Bye Baby, Killing Mum, Slammer and Two-Way Split

When was the last time you read a book that was so fun that you just couldn't stop reading? Well as they say on their website, Pulp Press are "dedicated to providing entertainment and escapism in the form of dime novels, penny dreadfuls and spicy stories that will be accessible to everybody." As a Pulp Press title, Danny Hogan's Jailbait Justice does not disappoint.

Set in a future where an apocalypse has returned Texas to its Old West roots, Jailbait Justice tells the story of gunfighter Jezebel Misery St. Etienne, who mooches around Austin drinking whiskey and killing the unrighteous. She takes a commission to escort a young woman named Alice to Houston where Alice intends to claim the three thousand gold bits left by her father with a local businessman. Of course, this is a pulp novel, so expect prison breaks, shoot outs and even zombies...

Part road trip, part Western, part horror and part thriller, Jailbait Justice starts out at a cracking pace and doesn't let up. Jezebel is a hard-talking, fast-shooting anti-hero, the whiskey-swigging lovechild of Snake Plisskin and Ripley. Danny Hogan piles misfortune on her, leaving you wondering how she's going to get herself out of one bad situation after another. Alice proves a good foil for her, and the mutual respect they end up discovering is a thing of beauty.

Jailbait Justice is incredibly violent AND incredibly fun, and I zipped through it, always wanting to know what happened next. It's a terrific read, and I hereby award it five out of five!

The Apocalypse isn't just a bunch of old rocks in Greece, you know? It's The End Of Days. The Second Dark Age. Scary, eh? And it's going to be great! Well, if Danny Hogan's brilliant Jailbait Justice is in any way prophetic it will be.

Jailbait Justice is the story of Jezebel Misery St Etienne, who made her first blood soaked appearance in Pulp Metal Magazine. Jezebel is a tough and funny sharpshooter with a dirty mouth. Like Mad Max and Tank Girl's inglorious bastard off-spring, she rights wrongs across a post apocalypse landscape with the aid of a massive gun called Comeuppance

In Jailbait Justice Jezebel is lumbered with taking a mouse of a girl called Alice across the badlands to the bright lights and apparent sanctuary of Houston. This sparky relationship has echoes of the films Three Mules For Sister Sarah and The African Queen and it gives the story an extra bullet in its barrel. Along the way the quarrelsome pair encounter bloodthirsty bandits, freaks, cannibals and all manner of danger.

Danny Hogan's previous novellas for Brit Grit publishers Pulp Press were both cracking reads but with Jailbait Justice he has excelled himself. Horror, sci-fi and spaghetti western all violently collide in a story that is visceral, scary, funny, exciting and so clearly crying out for a sequel. Or two. Jailbait Justice is the sort of book that you throw a sicky to finish!

Six shots right on target!

There is no way of adequately describing Dany Hogan's Jailbait Justice in a review like this - you simply have to buy it and try it ... you won't be disappointed, if you are, you clearly need to be lobotomized and put out to grass on a desert island. There is no chance a mainstream publisher would risk its neck on this; it's too genre-twisting, would confuse the life out of the marketing department! This is a big positive: like it says on the tin - "fiction like it used to be". Bold. Expansive. Experimental.

Brilliant, well written story that I didn't want to end. Full of action and violence from start to finish, not a single boring moment. Hogan got Jezebel Misery St. Etienne's (cool name) character down perfectly. Although Jezebel was a foul mouthed, violent and angry young woman, she was vulnerable with human emotions which made her loveable. A lot of characters like that usually lack the human element which make them unreal and unlikeable. Jailbait Justice goes beyond the enjoyment of the previous two books (Killer Tease and The Windowlicker Maker) and the ending left me hoping for a sequel.

4.0 out of 5 stars A cracking good read 6 Oct. 2011
By Court Merrigan - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Jailbait Justice, by Danny Hogan, is one cracking good read. 23,000 words of pure pulp fun and at $2.99 on the Kindle, a pure steal. Imaginative without skimping on the blood or the story.

"I will tell you this, hand on heart, I ain't good for much at all. I can cook a meal fair enough and, when a nice tune kicks up, I have been known to dance in a way that'd attract the fellas like bees around honey. That was about it except, of course, for killing. And, in these wretched times, where a girl's only chance is her old .44, it ain't a bad thing to be good at."

Titular character Jezebel Misery St. Etienne (easily wins this year's prize for coolest character name) is a gun for hire in postapocalypse Texas. True enough, there are a couple plot holes here and there, but not so's you notice enough to ruin the fun. One of those books that will keep you reading just for the sheer joy of it. Go grab it.
4.0 out of 5 stars Fun at the End of the World 13 Sept. 2011

There's something awful alluring about the post-Apocalyptic novel, isn't there? It's a great tradition, and one that opens up to all kinds of possibilites, serious and comic.
Danny Hogan's third novel, Jailbait Justice, takes place in such a world, populated with gunslingers, mutants, roving bandits and general ne'er-do-wells in a decidedly Old West-style.
Strutting through this world is Jezebel St. Ettienne, a misfit in a world of misfits, her only friend Comeuppance, the big-ass .44 she wears at her hip.
Against her better judgement (which is not that reliable anyway) Jezebel agrees to act as bodyguard for young, lady-like Alice on the dangerous journey from Austin to Houston, a perilous undertaking wrought with danger and weirdness at every turn. Waiting at the end of the journey: revenge against the powerful fella who killed Alice's family, and lots and lots of money.
Jailbait Justice is paced crazy-fast, the characters are all straight-out bizarro, and there's not a boring moment. But the real strength of the novel is Jezebel herself-- Hogan could easily have made her a more typical "hot chick with a gun", but instead he chose to make her a short, "curvy", foul-mouthed little roustabout with a green-double mohawk and a mouthful of chew. Jezebel has a strong sense of justice which seems inherent in her, but at the same time she won't hesitate to unload a few rounds from Comeuppance into your belly if the fancy strikes her. She's an all-around engaging heroine, and one I sincerely hope Hogan brings back in a sequel.
Lest you think I'm just gushing, I will point out that some of the editing is a bit loose, especially toward the end. Misspellings, typoes, what-not. I reckon that's just part of the deal with Kindle sometimes, though. It didn't effect my enjoyment of the novel.
5.0 out of 5 stars Jezebel has her gun on her hip and she's pissed...... 1 May 2011

Danny Hogan has written another winner. So it is the end of the world. Now you have a burned out state of Texas filled with criminals, crusty'uns, and lanky'uns. Doug Goldberg needs to get his daughter, Alice, to Houston safely. Who better to do this impossible job than Jezebel Misery St. Etienne? You may not think much of her with her two purple mohawks, blue bandana, short skirt, low cut top to show off her ample bosom, military boots, and duster. But this chick has a huge .44 named Comeuppance she wears on her hip and she knows how to use it. The long journey takes you on an exciting ride through the small towns of Texas leaving a bloody trail behind every step of the way.
You find yourself cheering out loud and secretly hoping someone will start trouble with Jezebel just to see her in action. Once you start, there is no putting this book down until you reach the end.
Maybe pick up Danny Hogan's "The Windowlicker Maker" while you are on here to catch a teaser at the end of the book setting you up for Jezebel's story. Not only is Danny Hogan great at making you feel the action, his books give you that exciting feeling of reading a real pulp fiction book, just the way pulp novels used to be back in the good ole days.
5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating, fun novel. 6 July 2011

This book grabbed me by the throat and wouldn't let me turn away. It has the feel of a Tarantino film, the punch of a heavy-weight fighter, and the heart of a righteous, pissed-off woman. This was my introduction to Danny Hogan and I'm off now to purchase his other books.
