I've always been interested in the Maya and Aztec cultures and Laura Perry has a wealth of knowledge which she's able to explain in ways that are really down to earth, practical and ping all the light-bulbs in the head :-). The Maya wisdom is so very similar to my own British Celtic ways. It's a delight to see the knowing of the universe through shamanic cultures all around the world showing us the same truths ... truths that modern western folk are only just getting a grip on through science.

Laura's writing is good, neat and concise - something I always need from a book. The plot evolves nicely too although i would have liked a deeper involvement much earlier in the story but I can see why she worked it the way she did and it does work. The characters sound like people, or parts of people, she knows and they all stand up and are consistent, congruent. I find myself liking the Maya people and finding them interesting, deep and sensible while wanting to slap all of the American characters at times LOL but that doesn't stop the page-turning quality of the story. I'm not a YA fan but this bridges the gap between young adult and adult, I kept on picking it up and reading whenever I got the chance, just had to get to the end.

The end is satisfying and not happy-ever-after which is very good, it's real and still has problems, things that will be difficult. I very much like it that Maddie grows, and grows up, setting her feet firmly on the adult path and understanding the responsibilities she takes on. There's a good opportunity for a follow-up book here and I'd very much like that :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing Tale 21 Feb. 2013
By Shari Lewis - Published on Amazon.com

This is an engaging and fast-paced story - part mystery, part adventure, part romance - all wrapped up in the history and mysticism of the ancient Maya culture. The tale is populated with believable characters and the settings are described so well it's quite easy to imagine myself there. While I'm not an archeologist, the author's knowledge of the field is impressive, as is her command of Maya culture and language.

My personal acid test of a novel's success is how involved I become in the story. Jaguar Sky kept me thinking and re-thinking the interconnections between characters and possible outcomes to the very end. My only complaint is that I wanted even more of the story. Highly recommend!

1.0 out of 5 stars Sorry...but this is not worth the price of admission 15 April 2013

I hope to find a quick read based in Belize to pick up some interesting background tidbits for an upcoming trip there without doing the work of reading more serious offerings. I found clunky prose, inept use of language, implausible, immature story lines. Really, find another book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a Great Adventure! 19 Sept. 2014

Jaguar Sky
Author Laura Perry
Published January 2013

I just finished reading Jaguar Sky. I really loved the book. I have always been interested in the Maya culture. Maddie is a college student on an archeological dig to Belize. The story has many twisted and turns. I like the characters they are believable and you really care about them.

Maddie has been haunted by dreams and she hopes to find some of the answers on this project. There are both good guys and bad guys but nothing is what it seems. I like the mystical aspect as well as the tension in the relationship between characters. One of the strong points that I like about Maddie is that she is independent. She is not a damsel in distress needing to be saved by a man. I enjoyed watching her character evolve and develop as she finds her confidence and her destiny. The author has been to the country herself so the added tid bits of information about the area and the people just add even more interesting facets to the story.

I did not purchase this book from Amazon but received it as a gift.

5.0 out of 5 stars captivating story filled with tons of historical detail 8 Aug. 2013
By kelly mcgill - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
I read this story online yesterday, almost a year after its publication, and while I was looking for something to pass the time on a 105F day outside, I ended up discovering a wonderful story. Personally, I believe the details make the story and this one had a plethora. I enjoy reading stories in which the author shows they actually did research and know the subject matter. It helps make the story believable. Jaguar Sky is a story who's details are alive, vivid and actually take you to Belize, actually make you believe you might , one-day, be smart enough to figure out the Mayan calendars and actually make you root for the characters. I will admit several characters got on my nerves, but as antagonists, that's their job. Over-all, this adventure into past-lives, jungle lives , and archeology was a light read and very enjoyable. I believe I will try on other Laura Perry books for size in the future!
