The late Robert Parker's re-engineered series of jazz compact discs offers here a broad selection of tracks by the Texan trombonist and bandleader, Jack Teagarden (1905-1964). As with all the discs in the series a relatively radical approach to conserving and enhancing the sounds of the original 78's will not appeal to everyone, and indeed there is a strong case for preserving the often noisy backgrounds of the original recordings. Be that as it may, new fans are likely to be made for Jack Teagarden by this particular disc because of its clean, bright sound, with a subtly three-dimensional acoustic.

The disc is a good introduction to Jack Teagarden's musicianship between the 1930's up to 1951 and contains the wonderful "Junk Man", which features the harp playing of Casper Reardon - a rare example (though not unique) of jazz harp. Reardon was a classically trained harpist who played in the symphony orchestras of Cincinnati and Philadlphia, but on this track shows he was fully capable of swinging with the best, and the best most certainly included Jack Teagarden.

Love this recording immensely, bright but not over so, and just what I needed. It made my Hi Fi come alive.
