Review

The Jack Russell tribute. No finer present has arrived on the bookshelves in time for Christmas: a delightful picture book devoted to Jack Russell terriers. I, Jack Russell (Booth-Clibborn Editions, £22.50) has been compiled by Andy Hughes, a marine photographer from Cornwall, whose rather scrappy and unkempt terriers, Lily and Maui, accompany him surfing and beachcombing. His book shows terriers the world over mousing, sitting in bars, having an unlikely friendship with a pet rabbit, rolling in sand or just being generally comic. --Country Life, December 2012<br \><br \>Barking Up the Right Tree. They say the reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his tongue, and that is particularly true of a Jack Russell. The perky little terriers and their larger-than-life personalities have had packs of fans ever since they were first bred by the Reverend John Russell, a keen huntsman, in the 19th Century. Apparently, he so liked the spots on Trump, his milkman s little helper, that he bought her and went on to establish a line that became a recognised breed by 1850. Their irrepressible energy and brighteyed intelligence certainly caught the eye of photographer Andy Hughes, who has produced a captivating little book, I, Jack Russell (Booth-Clibborn). It is packed with his shots of Jack Russells peering and posing, barking and snoozing, playing and running. If this book doesn t make you smile, check your pulse for signs of life. --Mail on Sunday, January 2013

It is impossible to not want a copy of this book if you are a Jack Russell adorer. Every facet of their canny characters has been captured by Andy Hughes.Photographs taken from doggy eye level offer a glimpse into the world of the JRT. These are not formal portraits but they capture the Jack Russell Terrier at its best - running, rolling, roistering and resting. Hughes visits the Terrier Trail in Florida, scampers through the English countryside, bounces along beaches and capers in the kitchen. Excerpts of text from Inside of a Dog: What Dogs See, Smell and Know by Alexandra Horowitz accompany the images. --The Field, March
