Made-for-TV action thriller based on the bestseller by Jack Higgins. When the Chinese, the British government, Hong Kong businessmen and the mafia all find out about a secret covenant on the status of Hong Kong, signed by Chairman Mao in 1944, they will each do whatever it takes to be the first to lay hands on it. Enter undercover tough guy Sean Dillon (Rob Lowe), pressured by Brigadier Ferguson (Kenneth Cranham) into preventing the document from slipping into the wrong hands. That's if Sean can keep his eye off the local ladies for long enough...

I watched this again today having been let down somewhat on the first viewing. I hoped i'd been a little harsh on the TV treatment since I like Jack Higgins stuff and I settled in to give it another go. Sadly the second viewing didn't raise my appreciation. They seem to have spent loads on location shots, this thing goes all over the world and there are a few decent sets. The story is fine and the woman playing Bernstein is excellent but Rob Lowe and most of the rest of the cast are dreadful. I can see a few well known faces in there but they deliver their lines as though they're drugged. It looks like it was shot on an old camcorder and the music sounds like it came from an 80's digital watch. I guess it depends upon the production company and the resources they've got but I've seen many good TV movies, Robin Cooks Formula For Death springs to mind as a good example. I've also seen Thunder Point with Kyle Maclachlan as Sean Dillan and it's just as bad as this.

From the opening scenes this high-octane drama starts with Dillon (Rob Lowe)being rescued) by the Brigadier(Kenneth Cranham)who blackmails him through the whole film to do "one more job" in order to retrieve a hidden covenant signed by Mao Tse Cheung in 1944 and which is now priceless in the standing of modern day Hong Kong/British business and land status. Also after the covenant are the Mafia, to sell to the Chinese which is what Dillon has to prevent.Throw in a revenge attack by an outlawed IRA group for good-measure and you have a really good,fast-moving film for your money with pretty good acting and overall finish. Also stars veteran German actor Jurgen Prochnow,Deborah Moore,Daphne Cheung and Ingerborga Dapkunaite who are all very fit.

why do they always get Americans to play Irish parts? against all my judgement I watched ' Rob Lowe, on dangerous ground. then Micky Rourke in a Prayer for the dying' having read ALL of Jack Higgins books what a load of rubbish, at times they forgot they where Irish, and the so called Irish accent left a lot to be desired, what was wrong with Pete Postlewaite? (r.i.p.) or Daniel Day Lewis. before they made the big time. they would have played Dillion far better, after all Dillion is surposed to be around 5-6. the only decent movie of Jack Higgins book is 'the eagle has landed' but look at the actors in it.
