I have recently purchased a DR-M10 Recorder and have found it to be a really excellent machine.
I have purchased JVC DVD-R's from the high street, which are "up to 8x speed" and are compatible for use on the DR-M10. There are also discs by other manufacturers, which are compatible. I have also used -RW discs at "up to 4x speed" which allow more flexible recording. Both are compatible with the DR-M10 - you do not need to buy specifically 2x discs.
Each disc is readily available on the high street and I think it a shame anyone thinks otherwise as I would recommend the recorder to anyone.

JVC in their "wisdom" standardised on DVD-R/RW discs in the 2 x speed format, the blank discs are now rarer than hen's teeth, none of the major suppliers of blank media stock the cake box bulk packs of DVD-R 2 x speeds any more (I know I have looked and searched and given up), only the hellishly more expensive RAM discs (if you are lucky!) are still in stock....because nobody bought any probably!. Shame as it is a nice machine, easy to programme and use, picture quality and sound are near perfect when using video leads and not scart connectors. But that 2 x speed is the pits! I had to buy the last 200 off the shelf from a shop in the USA and hope they will last. Apparantly there is a firmware upgrade you can download, but after 14 frutiless attempts to get JVC UK to reply to e-mails/faxes/phone calls I gave up! Even JVC don't make their own brand 2x speed discs any more.....go figure!!! If only they had made this machine take DVD- AND DVD + of the more readily available 4 x or 8 x speeds I would have been happy. My other niggle is that when you make multi recordings on one disc and before you finalise the disc to a read only format, there is a nifty menu with little mini screens of all the seperate recordings you have made so you can use the cursor to pick the one you want to watch, the little screens play each show in synch....this is a cool and easy way to find the show you want amongst many..but once you finalise the disc this is no longer available.....doh! Why??!!
My advice is look for a recorder that takes blank discs you can buy in the High Street or via the internet. So be sure you check out the standard before buying one! Look for a multi standard machine with a hard drive, avoid 2 x speed like the plague mes amis!!!

i have returned this unit to jvc 4 times (£20 postage each time) and it always lasts a few months and then gets an error flashing 'loading...loading'. even after replacing the unit with a new unit each time it still happens so it is a manufacturing fault that jvc do not know how to fix.

when it works....great. i feel however it was a big mistake buying this dvdr.
