Let me preface this by saying if you commute with your wife then this is brilliant for subtly recording her nagging you in the car.
I chose this camera after weighing up the other options at the time of writing. The next best contenders (for my purposes) were the Transcend Drive Pro 200 and the XiaoYi Dashcam (Currently you have to order this direct from China). I didn't see any advantage in video quality for the extra money, in fact the Transcend footage actually looks poorer. I also decided that the ability to download videos from the camera via WiFi is not really necessary and apparently is quite slow. GPS seems a bit superfluous, I think for insurance purposes the video alone is enough. Apparently you can buy a GPS module and attach it to the G1W though, but I haven't tried this.
In HD mode (which you definitely want to use) this camera uses roughly 100MB of space for every minute recorded. So an 8GB card will give you around 80 minutes of recording. In this scenario if you have a one hour commute then the camera will have recorded over the first 40 minutes by the time you get home. Worth bearing in mind if you forget to copy an important recording at work. Files are nicely organised into date-stamped folders and then sectioned into video segments. You can choose 2, 3, or 5 minutes. (Choose 2, otherwise the files are massive and take longer to transfer).
The camera has no internal storage, so if you forget to replace the card then you won't record anything.
I bought the
'Nextbase Car Camera Hard Wire Kit'
and installed it in my Fiat Panda. This is a power supply that 'piggybacks' onto a fuse in your car (such as your windscreen wipers) so that it only uses power - and will start recording when your car is switched on. Note to owners of recently built Fiat Pandas - The fusebox you need is located behind a panel in the glovebox, not left of the steering column as the manual suggests. Once you've done this you don't have to deal with hanging cables and making sure it's plugged into your cigarette lighter socket, which is brilliant. Set and forget!
Looks-wise, it is cheap. Which I think is good if you want to leave it in your parked car. It doesn't quite fit behind the rear-view mirror in my car, and it is not that subtle looking from outside the car. You can set the screen to turn off 3 minutes after the camera is switched on, but the camera sometimes decides it doesn't want to turn it off.
You can review the footage on the cameras screen itself, on the computer via USB or play it to your telly over HDMI.
Summary:
- Buy this camera.
- Preferably buy a 32GB micro SD card for it.
- Buy the Nextbase hardwire kit.
- Buy a microSD cardreader if you dont already have one.
- Set it to record 2 minute video segments.

If you turn the dash camera down a little bit towards the car dash board, it really helps to balance the sunlight or any bright light reflections. After many years of using dash cameras, this is a fabulous best tip.

With Light setting, I have put them to +2 (Exposure Compensation) as it gives a really nice recording balance level during the day and night.

I leave (off) so to save power, I only use it in emergency in the dark to take photos or recording outside the car or checking stones on the tyres etc.
