Format: Audio CD
This disc could have been called something like "Bach at home" or, as suggested in the above title, "Hausmusik". For it offers a well judged and beautifully performed selection of the kinds of instrumental music that would have been played and practised in the Bach household on his preferred domestic instrument, the clavichord. The selection covers works of both major and minor stature, starting with BWV 964 - the fine transcription, attributed to Bach's son Wilhelm Friedemann, of the Violin Sonata BWV 1003. It works superbly on the keyboard, as does the equally successful arrangement of the Partita in E major BWV 1006 which ends the programme. This latter is certainly one of my own Bach favourites, ever since I first got to know its prelude in the magnificent orchestrated version which forms the opening sinfonia of Cantata 29, "Wir danken dir, Gott"; and here it sounds marvellous on Jovanka Marville's clavichord.

Between these we have five keyboard preludes, BWV 939-943, followed by another favourite, the concerto in D, BWV 972, which Bach arranged from Vivaldi's concerto no. 9 of "L'Estro Armonico". This really sounds here as if it had been written for keyboard all along - the sign of a successful transcription, of course - and again, in Professor Marville's hands, it's a tour de force of extraordinary brilliance. This is followed by the Toccata in E minor BWV 914, another lovely work ending with an especially fine fugue. (NB At the time of writing, you can sample the CD's tracks at amazon.de)

Jovanka Marville has already brought us some fine harpsichord recordings, of Louis and François Couperin among others.
