Product description

About the Author

Victoria L. James is a teenage girl stuck in a thirty-something-year-old's body. Living somewhere 'oop north' in England, she has had a strong passion for words and stories going as far back as she can remember, which she credits to her grandmother and her love of reading anything that was on sale and cheap from the local market stall. Never once did she think she would release a novel, though. At best, she thought her love of language and her ability to create stories in her mind would provide her with a 'get out of jail free' card whenever she messed up and her parents were mad at her during her teenage years... and when even that didn't work out, she thought she was pretty much done for. When an opportunity presented itself for her to take a back seat from paid working life for a few years, she knew straight away that she had to try and write about a few of these worlds she'd come up with along the way, and quieten all the voices in her head without racking up a heavy psychiatry bill for the pleasure. Wearing her heart on her sleeve and trying to lighten her friends' and family's lives with naff, and more often than not, badly-timed, nineties jokes, she has yet to learn the art of knowing when to shut up. Which is another reason writing became a passion of hers. With pen and paper, there are no limits. A firm believer in never quitting, with a ridiculous obsession for all things Rocky, she hopes that one day she writes a story that will inspire at least one person out there to keep on going if they're struggling. Other than that, she's just a regular old converse wearing, corona sipping, English version of Chandler Bing, who loves and adores her family more than life itself. Oh, and she also has two cats. Every writer has to mention their cats, right?

"Beautiful is a weak word thrown around by those with no clear vision...It's not enough. The beauty you hold is ineffable, completely ineffable." --Perfect words to describe this author and her work with this book.

"Izzy Moffit's Road to Wonderland" is a story of survival, friendship, and love. We follow Isabella Moffit on a journey of discovery, a true coming of age story with all of its highs and lows. We meet Izzy when she is ten years old, a child with the weight of the world already heavy upon her tiny shoulders. Her life is not good. The only light in her world is her best friend, Paris. The two girls formed a bond when they were both four years old, and that bond only grows stronger as they travel through life's experiences together.

"No-one can compare to her because there's no-one else I trust with who I really am, flaws and all."

But as integral to Izzy's existence as Paris is, this story is very much as the title suggests--Izzy Moffit's road. We watch as she navigates through life with a past that quietly tears at her despite her efforts to move forward. She is marked, her very being tinged with the darkness and fear that bleed into every aspect of her world. And, really, isn't that how it always is. We may deal with, overcome, heal from our pasts, but their mark on us is immovable.

"Every negative thought I've ever had about myself burns holes in my happiness, threatening to send it up in a burst of flames at any given moment."

That said, Izzy Moffit is no wilting flower. She is not weak, whiny, or helpless. Our heroine is determined, willful, and stronger than anyone her age should ever have to be and more than someone twice her age hopes to be.

I can honestly say this epic novel had me gripped from the very beginning to the end. Izzy reminded me so much of me and my experiences that I was in tears reading her story. I get sucked into stories pretty quick but i have never said until now that i have fallen in love with one. This is truly a must read book and I cannot wait to hear the rest of the story xxx

Izzy Moffit’s Road to Wonderland

I had the opportunity to read Izzy Moffit’s Road to Wonderland while beta reading and editing for Victoria L James and what a pleasure that was.

Victoria writes beautifully, I’m not ashamed to say I cried, I laughed, I gasped, everything that Izzy (and Paris) felt, I felt it along with them. It’s actually incredibly hard to edit a book you enjoy so much, I constantly had to go over it as I realised I was ‘reading’ instead of ‘editing’ and I’m looking forward to reading it purely for pleasure.

We meet Izzy and Paris in the Prologue, aged 10, immediately you can feel their bond, but also Izzy’s struggle. Her life is clearly poles apart from her best friend’s but even aged 10 they are funny, you actually can visualise this conversation between two 10 yr olds….

**“I’m her anchor.”
“Her wanker?”
Unable to stop myself from looking up, still struggling against the pain that’s floating around in the back of my head and making my eyes fill with water, I turn to her and frown. “You just swore.”
“You did it first,” she replies, holding back a giggle.
“No, no I didn’t. I said anchor… anchor!”
“Like one of those things on a boat?” Her little button nose turns up at the end, something she only ever does when she’s confused. **

As Izzy grows up and her life at home becomes unbearable, she's forced to run to the only other place she's ever called home. She runs to her best friend, Paris, and the Hemsworth family for help.

Aged 17 she picks herself up with their support and feels like her life can only be on the up, because it could hardly get worse, right? Hmmmm life has a way of letting you think that, then kicking you right were it hurts with a sucker punch!

Every so often a writer comes along with so much talent that it practically oozes from every word they scribble down. Victoria L. James is one of them. Every word she writes turns to pure gold and this, her debut novel, is proof of that.

A perfectly crafted and beautifully written testament to the human spirit to endure and survive, Izzy Moffit's Road to Wonderland is a fantastic debut novel. It's clear as you read that the author has poured her heart and soul into every word, and it has paid off in every way.

From humble beginnings, struggling her way through a nightmare childhood with her best friend, Paris, by her side, we are introduced early to the spirit that has kept Izzy moving through a life that is filled with trials and tribulations that would destroy many. We watch as the young, frightened girl grows into a strong woman, fiercely protective of those she loves and a loyal and caring friend. Her friendship with her soul sister, Paris, is a constant theme throughout the story and the enduring love between them, even when they're separated.

The main themes I took from the book are those of love, friendship and hope. The hope that the love we have for our friends can pull us through anything and that no matter what life throws at us, we ARE strong enough to get through it. Just a beautiful and inspirational book. I expect great things to come from this author.
