Dr. Seidensticker was considered one of the great translators of modern Japanese literature during the 20th Century. As a consulting contemporary of Kawabata, it can be fairly assumed that his translations satisfied most of the intentions of the great master. Seidensticker's English translations are thought to be a primary reason Kawabata won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
NOTE: The photo used here by Amazon shows the cover of the older 1972-84 editions of this book. The 2001 version has a young woman against a purple background. Make sure your seller has the actual 2001 edition of this book, as all previous editions contain the ABRIDGED version of Izu Dancer that was originally published in Atlantic Magazine in 1954. The abridgment contains all the important aspects of the story, but in 2001 Seidensticker translated the full version of Izu Dancer along with making some small corrections to his original work.
Of the 3 Inoue stories included (The Counterfeitor, Obasute, The Full Moon), I found The Counterfeitor most interesting as it concerns the life of an art forger. Leon Picon also provides a helpful introduction to Inoue and his stories here. The stories are all of moderate length and not taxing. If you are a new reader of modern Japanese literature, this book would be an excellent place to start!
