Product Description

„X Buffy¡¦s very first album, recorded for Vanguard in 1964, which earned her Billboard¡¦s award for best newcomer of the year. „X A staggering debut, recorded when she was 23, which addresses usually difficult subject matter: war (¡¥The Universal Soldier¡¦, later a hit for Donovan); drugs (¡¥Cod'ine¡¦); sex (¡¥The Incest Song¡¦); and the mistreatment of Native Americans, of which Sainte-Marie is one (¡¥Now That the Buffalo's Gone¡¦).

Adopted Cree Indian Buffy Sainte-Marie was the first female singer I loved, and I still love her voice, her songs, her lyrics, her whole personality. Buffy has & had personality to burn.
This 1964 album, made when she was 23, is where it all began. It's as essential as any of her many other recordings (sixteen studio albums so far, and she's still only 76!) and contains one or two core Buffy classics, such as the angry opening track Now That the Buffalo's Gone, the equally engaged and enraged Universal Soldier (a No.1 hit for Donovan a year later, and as eloquent an anti-war song as any of the period), as well as the sad He Lived Alone in Town, a tale of loneliness and isolation.
Buffy was never afraid of tackling the big issues, in a personal, invariably compassionate way. In this, she reminds me of the late David Ackles or her fellow Canadian Gordon Lightfoot.
Ananias is a vocally dramatic song about the three biblical characters who share that name, and the insistently rhyming title track is a semi-serious warning to those who would copy others.
Occasionally Buffy would sing the blues (as in Rolling Log Blues on her second LP, the wonderful Many a Mile) and You're Gonna Need Somebody On Your Bond is sung with all the passion she gives her own songs.
The jaunty Cripple Creek is just Buffy and her own mouthbow accompaniment.
Later, her musical language expanded, becoming more sophisticated and varied (eg. the albums Illuminations and I'm Gonna Be A Country Girl Again) but her first three folk records are still some of the most fascinating, original, and least dated of their era.
These reissues are blessed with proper booklets including full track listings and original liner notes - though as things to own they can never quite compare to the old nicely thick-cardboard LPs.

A great start!

Buffy Sainte-Marie is of American Indian descent, and her voice and music reflect this, as do the lyrics which reflect the political minority. She greatly impressed me while I was serving in the army, and 'Universal Soldier', played often, raised a number of questions from my superiors and comrades! It made no difference, every night it was Buffy, Joan, Dylan and PP&M.

I have been wanting this CD for absolutely ages, so purchased it myself. Although the music is slightly dates, which I like, I felt the lyrics on the songs were still true in the 21st Century especially Universal Soldier - when playing this CD it is best to be somewhere you can listen to the lyrics - it will may make you weep! It's My Way!

I had this album on vinyl many years ago and loved it. So it was really good to hear the songs again.

This CD has replaced the original LP I had when this album was first released. It was a favorite then and this CD does not disappoint.
