DMX broke on to the rap scene in 1998 with a graveyard style of rapping unheard of in the hip-hop world, his debut single being "Get At Me Dog." DMX opened up the doorway for rappers such as Ja Rule to follow suite (but not on the same level), not a rapper alive can match DMX's thought inducing lyrics. From start to finish, this album plays with your mind, and with every listen each track brings a new perspective to what is being said. To sum up DMX in one word - intense. A dark, fiery, aggressive vocal style combined with true to life and conflictious lyrical genius relating to true-to-life issues such as religion, death, love, greed, and many others. DMX takes rap to a new level with his debut album, a true classic.

I actually got this album quite a while ago and have to say its the best he's done so far. With tunes like stop being greedy, hows it going down and one of my favourites, ruff ryders anthem how could it not be. If you like dmx and you dont have this album, then you dont like dmx.

DMX came out at the time in the late 90's when the world of rap was still reeling from the passing of two of it's greatest sons; 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G. He featured in a number of songs and making guest appearances, before dropping what is one of the most hardcore and revered début rap albums of all time. This album has everything in terms of gruff flows, hard sampled beats, energy, charisma, darkness and light. His flow and sound were uniquely refreshing, as it was during the time period when Hip-Hop was making that steady cross over to the main stream, entering pop culture, almost distancing itself from it's ghetto and concrete roots. This album is one of the last best offerings of the 90's. DMX's husky voice, barking through songs with a real intensity and unflinching passion. The beats have a very old school flavour to them, and nothing feels overboard or glossed for the MTV fans. This is gangster rap for the real rap fans! Should easily make any Top Ten list for best rap album, as it just has it all. Whilst many MCs were busy trying to impress the pop friendly masses, DMX displays a refreshing shout back to the real roots of the gangster rap genre. This album rides the same bus as Nas's Illmatic in the sense that the début has never been bettered, despite the artists best attempt to do so, and although DMX has fallen off the map in recent years, with some poor offerings, this album has stood the test of time since it's release and should be heard by all those that claim their love for the more hardcore side of the Hip-Hop world. Peace!

Way up there with the greatest, this is an album that is so dark and brilliant that it leaves you wondering whether he should have brought out any others because there is no way he could have bettered this.
Every song is very very good. Even the "Intro" which wasn't given a name is a study in dark, brooding and thumping music. DMX is THE hip hop anthem manufacturer and you are guaranteed to have heard at least one of his songs.
Buy this CD because you can listen to it 23,536 times and still not be bored of it. Reason enough i think.

I own all of the DMX albums and this is the one that stands out most in my collection. The style is unique to Earl Simmons as no one else is near to matching his intensity and skill. After listening through this once you'll definatley be listening to Damien, ATF and Stop Being Greedy as those three are the tracks that DMX really expoldes on and his anger shines through on every rap.
His other albums are excellent but for me this is the one that defines DMX.He is the only rapper to use such powerful beats, and this album has a real rocking base to what he adds the strongest vocals in the game.Buy this. Then buy his others.

This is without doubt the best hip-hop album of 1998. DMX delivers his lyrics with so much intensity you think he might explode! Each track gives you a slightly different flavour, and each is as memorable as the last. I thoroughly recommend this album to anyone who is just getting interested in rap, or who has been a fan for years - this album is the lick!!!!

If you're a fan of DMX you should buy this album as it is his best album by quite a long way. If you're not a fan of DMX I would suggest buying this if you like rap artists such as 2Pac, 50 Cent, Ja Rule or Eminems more gangster stuff. Check out the songs 'Intro', 'Ruff Ryders Anthem' and 'ATF' to see what DMX is like

What can I say? Nothing, other than DMX is the best. This is certainly the dopest rap album I've ever heard, with lyrics to match those of anyone else and loads of outstanding tracks. Particular mention has to be given to 'Damien', 'Hows it going down', 'ATF' and 'I can feel it' as each of these tracks is truly superb in its own unique way, hell even the intro track is absolutely superb. Enough said - Just buy it.
