I really liked the chemistry involved. It has developed a love of chemistry in me, and the way that the whole story was resolved using chemistry must have been really hard to do.

Got caught up in Itch by accident - that cheap buy in a high street book shop. Okay, so I'm a man old enough to be reading this to grandchildren but a blinding read. Was it sad to buy in hardback? Never!

I am a life-long book worm and an Arts graduate, with a long history of studying Literature. What I am relatively new to, is the art of reviewing books. In essays, or in book clubs, you can discuss the characters, plots, themes and writing style of a book in great detail. But in reviews it is always best to avoid spoilers, so I will do my best not to give too much away.

This is the third book in the Itch series, which follows a young element hunter, who collects the periodic table. In the first book, the spectacularly named Itchingham Lofte comes across a new element; the highly radioactive 126. This discovery leads him into a series of dangerous and terrifying adventures, involving his arch enemy, Dr Nathaniel Flowerdew.

As a fan of the Itch books, I have been anticipating the release of Itchcraft with a large degree of impatience. It was downloaded to my Kindle shortly after midnight, on the day of release, and I had finished the book within 24 hours, despite work getting in the way. It is such a page turner - full of excitement, humour, deathly peril, and heaps of suspense. I enjoyed it so much that I have already read it again, wanting to savour every moment.

I genuinely admire those who can write a series of books, particularly in the adventure or fantasy genre. Whilst it must be helpful to an author to have time to develop characters that are already familiar, it must be so difficult to keep moving the plot to a new and more exciting level. After the first Itch book, I really wondered how Simon Mayo could top the excitement and danger. But Itch Rocks, and now Itchcraft have really moved things up a gear.

ItchCraft is the third in the fantastic Itch series following the adventures of our element hunter hero Itchingham Lofte and his friends by "that bloke off the wireless" who it turns out is a rather fine author too.

First and foremost ItchCraft is a fantastic, thrilling, terrifying audacious adventure story. I read much of it with my hand over my mouth but there is also time for a little well handled love interest for Itch and the continuing themes from the earlier books of the importance of friends and of not being embarrassed about your choices and passions in life or what other folk think of you.

It is impossible to say much about the story without giving away huge, massive spoilers. Safe enough to say that Flowerdew is back and is not a happy bunny; there is exploding Euro notes (really) and things get very very nasty very quickly! Of course the kids are smarter than everyone; it wouldn't be much fun if they weren't!

ItchCraft is a more mature book, both in the character development, plot and the writing style. The author's voice is clearer and more distinctive than ever and he has the most extraordinary imagination. While there is still humour it is a darker book, less laugh out loud funny than parts of the first two. The situations Itch and his friends find themselves in are genuinely terrifying; Simon Mayo writes scary very well.

I've said before I don't think the Itch books are kids books; they are just books that happen to have children in them that are suitable for adults and children. There is a real enthusiasm for the science, it is at the heart of the books but not to the extent that it gets in the way of the story. They are not science books; they are adventure stories that happens to have some great science in them.

I love science and so this was an amazing book choice. I have read the first 2 books (Itch and Itch rocks) and they were amazing. I am so glad I have the go react app on the periodic table to try these things out. This book didn't fail me on that! Actually it didn't fail me on anything. Anyway all facts in this book are accurate and I would recommend it to anyone who loves science and probably of any age from 8 upwards. Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!😃😀😄😊☺️😉😜😝😛😌😂😅😇😏😋😆😺😸😼😹👅👍
