Though it bears little resemblance to the celebrated 1969 original starring Michael Caine, this 2003 remake of The Italian Job stands on its own as a caper comedy that's well above average. The title's a misnomer--this time it's actually a Los Angeles job--but the action's just as exciting as it propels a breezy tale of honour and dishonour among competing thieves. Inheriting Caine's role as ace heist-planner Charlie Croker, Mark Wahlberg plays straight-man to a well-cast team of accomplices, including Mos Def, Jason Statham and scene-stealer Seth Green in a variation of the role originally played by Noel Coward. As the daughter of Croker's ill-fated mentor (Donald Sutherland), Charlise Theron is recruited to double-cross a double-crosser (Edward Norton in oily villain mode), and once again, speedily versatile Mini Coopers (this time, the modern BMW versions) play a pivotal role in director F Gary Gray's exhilarating car-chase climax. I love watching the 2003 version of The Italian Job again and again. The film is perfect on many levels, producing multiple rushes of emotion, excitement, humour and anger. The canal speedboats and Mini driving are gripping. The brilliant plot, scriptwriting, acting and directing are faultless. The film’s quality far surpasses the original 1969 version, which is really slapstick comedy. Although the plots of the two films are unrelated except for the title, gold bullion and the Mini. (Did they use real gold bullion in the 2003 version? It appeared so.) Charlize Theron was the perfect choice giving a touch of glamour and spice to the all male cast. A great film!

Not A Remake - Just the Same Title!

I'm not really sure why they bothered to try and fit this into being a remake - asides from a few references here and there the story is different enough to a new film in it's own right just by changing some names etc and it would have avoided people comparing this to the original. If it must be compared, then sure the original is better. But it's a different film, and as a stand alone film it has enough action, humour and well puffed-out characters to keep you engaged through their capers to the end.

Many people have said to me its just a rip off of the original Italian job. Obviously the Michael Caine movie is a classic. Having now at last seen it i dont agree. IMO It should be treated as a separate movie. Yes there are similarities in the storylines however there is a lot that is totally different. Having been double crossed by one of the gang members after stealing gold bars and left for dead, the gang then set about stealing the gold back. He of course thinks they are all dead. Great boat chases... car chases... and plot. Excellent team of actors. Love it.

Well, the minis are fun. Theron and Sutherland are the only two actors that aren't cardboard. The heists are quite fun. The dialogue script is ... well, pretty awful bag of cliches. The minis are fun. The heists weren't particularly exciting (watch a bond movie set piece instead). But the minis are quite fun. I think that's about it.

This is a good film. Nothing like the plot of the original which is good. The original is a proper classic and I was dreading a remake of exactly the same plot. Sadly our WIFI was having an off day so we had several delays in the download. Recommend for action, nothing soppy and fun car stunts.

I knew that is was the US version and I thought I had seen it before and though it was a poor imitation.

However I was pleasantly surprised. It had a strong cast led by Mark Walberg, and it was extremely watchable. It was in the style of the Oceans 11 franchise.
