Product description

Product Description

Isle of Manx is the first ever Harry Manx compilation, and serves as a celebration of his tenth overall release! Including many Harry classics from his first album Dog My Cat all the way to tracks for the highly acclaimed Bread and Buddha released in 2009, Isle of Manx is sure to please fans and music lovers in general. With thirteen original tracks and two cover tunes it is a perfect doorway to the “mysticssippian” world of Harry Manx. "Canadian guitarist and singer-songwriter Harry Manx is an artist that critics have occasionally had a hard time getting their minds around. His unique amalgam of blues and other American roots music, classical Indian forms, and bits of rock, pop, and folk makes him difficult to pigeonhole, and self-appointed gatekeepers of those traditions sometimes bemoan his lack of purity, stubbornly missing the point. But Manx's trip is really quite easy to grasp: He's an accomplished and adventurous lap-slide guitarist - whether playing a National resonator, a solidbody lap-steel, a modified banjo or cigar-box guitar, or his signature 20-string Mohan Veena - and a compelling singer with a rich, warm, and soulful voice who writes intelligent and compassionate songs and puts them over with heartfelt conviction.” – Barry Cleveland, Guitar Player

Harry Manx - Isle Of Manx (Dog My Cat)
Subtitled "The Desert Island Collection", this is a greatest hits compilation from an Indo-blues singer-songwriter whose never had a hit and isn't likely to have one anytime soon. Over the years Harry Manx has ploughed a fairly lonely furrow, fashioning a hybrid genre that takes in and finds a home for rural blues, Indian instrumentation and structure, and classic singer-songwriter fare. That's quite a combination, and it's to Manx's credit that not only does he make it sound natural and engaging, the tracks here with the most overt Indian influences, namely JJ Cale's "Tijuana", the old chestnut, "Sitting On Top Of The World", and Manx's own "True To Yourself" appeal the most.

Manx's voice perfectly suits the material - gruff enough to add gravitas, but with enough flexibility to adapt to different musical styles. He knows his way around guitars, too. If you've heard the name before and you'd like to acquaint yourself with an artist who's doing something quite different, this is a fine place to start. 8/10.

By G. E. Harrison TOP 500 REVIEWER on 17 Jan. 2011
Format: Audio CD
This is a `best of' compilation of Harry Manx's previous 5 CDs and as such is a great introduction to a very individual, unique artist. He works similar territory to Taj Mahal, Eric Bibb and Ben Harper, that is laid-back blues-based acoustic music influenced by world music from various countries. However, as well as playing guitar, lap steel, banjo and harmonica Harry also plays a mohan veena (an Indian guitar with 20-strings) which gives his songs a much more unusual and exotic sound than any of the above.

This collection features 13 original songs and 2 covers and I think that Harry carries off that very difficult trick of writing original songs that have the same substance and authority as blues. Many of the songs also have an intensity and feeling that one normally associates with gospel although they are about secular subjects - as in "The Great Unknown". This is a great sounding CD and as well as great playing from Harry himself he is also joined on some tracks by, amongst others, the Canadian slide guitarist Kevin Breit, Steve Marriner on harmonica, Samidha Joglekar on vocals, Ravi Naimpally on tablas and George Koller on bass and dilruba. There are lots of good songs here and a variety of sounds, despite the fact that Harry does have his own very distinctive sound, I'd probably pick "Make Way for the Living" and "Lay Down my Worries" as two of my favourites. I wasn't so keen on Harry's interpretation of the old blues "Sitting on Top of the World".
