Fascinating history of the Isle of Dogs during WW2. A mixture of personal reminiscence together with lots of factual details, documents, statistics, photographs and detailed maps. I was born in the post war period, when lots of the Island was in a derelict state and this book gives a chronological account of the dramatic events of the preceding era. Particularly moving, I found, was the resilience and bravery of the Islanders as shown by their personal accounts. Highly recommended to anyone with an interest in The Island!

Reading this well written and well researched book underlines the way that the Second World War changed the Island forever, many of the close knit Island community were scattered over London, the country and the world. Many children evacuated never returned to their Island homes but went with their parents to new homes elsewhere. Most of the churches and pubs, formerly hubs of community life were now destroyed. This important historical record pays testament to the courage of those who survived and picked up the pieces to carry on to rebuild their lives and lists the memorials around the Island to those that paid the ultimate sacrifice.

V Good book,Its nice to see somebody writing about, the place where I was born and raised
It fetches back loads of memories and friends I had In my childhood.
I hope there will be another volume "Post War" as I lived on IOD until 1963.

As the author notes in the foreword, there have many books about the Blitz and its effect on British cities. What makes this one special is its use of first hand accounts from 'Islanders', including contemporaneous diaries. You get a real sense of the anxiety and anger felt by the community, the pressures on daily family life, way beyond the prevailing myths and clichés of the 'Blitz Spirit'. A respected local historian, researcher and author, Mick Lemmerman writes with incredible knowledge and passion about events that brought deep and irreversible destruction and change to a well-established and close knit working class community in the heart of the capital. The book's generously packed with photographs, many previously unseen and donated by the families of wartime Islanders. Highly recommended.

As usual, Mick Lemmerman has created a fascinating and very well written piece on an area of great interest to me as my family lived on the Isle of Dogs for a hundred years.
