Another quality book from the author & publisher. Its well written, quality photographs. It will form the basis for further exploration of the island & its distilleries in 2012. The only comment I would make is the lack of a decent map. It could be improved by having a more detailed topographic map & then various areas of interest can be easily referenced.

Bought as a Christmas present for a friend who will be visiting Islay this year. Small, but informative guide book, easily packed to take on holiday. She loved it.

I got this book before visiting Islay for the first time last week. I took it with me and referred to it while there. It is packed full of information and has some very lovely photos. It described very clealy all the places I visited and now that I have been, I'll read it through again. The historical outlines were fascinating and got my imagination running with the stories of the Lord of the Isles and the old clan rivalries.
Two negative points...the map is not detailed enough, but I solved that by buying an OS map and though it mentions all the bird life, without pictures I wouldn't know a chough from an albatross!

This was a really nice read and you have an excellent understanding of Islay after you are done including where to take walks. The map was good but not detailed. This is not a guide as to restaurants or hotels but history and locations of interest on the island. Beautiful photography.

This book gives the history of the Isle of Islay off the south west coast of Scotland. It also provides a guide of what to see for the visitor and has notes on some walks and the abundant nature that can be found on and around the island. If you are going to Islay this book is well worth reading before you trip and provides a useful guide whilst you are there.

This book really helped my Mum and I get the most out of our five day visit to Islay. It's a shame it isn't a bit more up to date (some places mentioned seem to have closed) and the map could be improved, but the text is interesting and photos beautiful. We read from this each evening in planning our next day and took it with us for background reading as we drove around this fascinating island.
