About the Author

Kerry was brought up in Peterborough. She now lives in Surrey with a very tolerant husband and two children. She studied at Bath University and speaks fluent Italian, Spanish and French. She also trained as a journalist at City University, then went on to write travel guidebooks for Thomas Cook.

After landing her dream job working on women’s magazines, she discovered that she hated writing about real people in case their families got upset.

The Writers’ Program at the University of California helped her move from fact into fiction – the perfect forum for exploring human emotions without worrying about some poor mother weeping over her son’s account of his childhood.

I downloaded this book after being recommended it and I really enjoyed reading it. It really was a book that offered 'escape' as I lost myself in the worlds of Roberta and Octavia.

The story is about two friends who have been there for each other through the ups and downs throughout their lives.

Roberta's marriage to Scott has come to an end much to Octavia's relief after years of him making her doubt herself and strip away her self esteem. As Roberta's life begins to adjust Octavia finds herself more frustrated with her own marriage; Johnathon is forever pointing out various things she hasn't done around the house and when he becomes redundant his presence at home increases Octavia's frustrations even more.

The problem is that Octavia has never got over her first love Xaviar who she met in Corsica when she was younger and child-free. Whilst helping Roberta look online for potential dates, Octavia begins to wonder what happened to Xavier and this little wonder becomes an all consuming obsession...

When I was reading this book I was lost in their worlds and really interested to see the dynamics between the various characters. I think it's very true that when a friend goes through a divorce it can have an impact upon you... seeing that friend suddenly have new social circles and get back into dating again but what I really liked is that despite it all, Octavia and Roberta still stood by each other.

There were various parts to the story that rang true a bit, about how Octavia and Jonathan were so busy living their lives that they didn't really have time to talk and Octavia wondered if there was anything to talk about other than their children.

I first discovered Kerry Fisher when I was gifted ‘After the Lie’ by NetGalley. I loved it so much that I downloaded The Island Escape.

Normally, a book cover like this wouldn’t entice me – a bit too twee – but because I loved her other book so much, I thought I’d give this one a go.

I opened it on my Kindle, and the first line grabbed me:

‘I was wearing the wrong bra for sitting in a police cell’.

I never looked back.

The book tells the story from two first person POV’s. Roberta Green and Octavia Shelton have been friends since school. But when Roberta’s marriage begins to fall apart, Octavia starts to question her relationship with her steady-but-annoying-as-hell (my words not hers) husband, Jonathan.

Even though the subject matter is quite serious (nothing funny about marriage breakups), this book had me laughing so many times, particularly when inside Octavia’s head. She had some of the most wonderfully funny phrases. During one conversation with Roberta….”Just be grateful you haven’t got boobs that you can tuck into the top of your pants.” Wonderfully real. Brilliantly funny.

Kerry has such an easy writing style. You find yourself swept along by her prose, and before you know it, you are turning the last page and feeling suddenly bereft, as though you have had wonderful friends torn from your life.

If you haven’t read anything by Kerry yet, and you love an easy read with likeable characters about real life stuff, then do check her out. And The Island Escape would be a great place to start.

I recently read Kerry's new book, After the Lie and loved it so much I decided to read this one which has been sat on my kindle for a while, hoping I would like it just as much, I was not disappointed.

I was hooked from the first page, what had Roberta done to put her in a police cell and could she put it right? I loved the way the story was told by Roberta and Octavia, alternating between the two at each chapter. I hated Scott with a vengeance and was hoping unspeakable things would happen to him in the very near future.

This story was happy, sad and emotional in equal measures and I was desperate for a happy ending for both Roberta and Octavia, whatever their misdemeanours they deserved that much, didn't they?

I love Kerry's style of writing and can't wait to read more of her work, I already have The School Gate Survival Guide sat on my kindle and look forward to reading it very soon.

I loved this book - it has the best opening line in a book ever! How can you not enjoy a book that opens with the line "I was wearing the wrong bra for sitting in a police cell."?
The characters in this story are beautifully written - they are very different personalities with different issues but both are brilliantly brought to life. Roberta made me want to scream occasionally but who doesn't have the odd friend like that? I really didn't want this story to end, one of those books where you miss the characters once you have finished the book. A highly recommended read that will make you smile (and want to shale Roberts!)

It wasn't immediately obvious which island would feature and it turned out not to be the one for which I had hoped! Nevertheless, it was easy to read, flowed well and the story held my interest throughout. The two main characters, friends from childhood but with different lifestyles, support each other through mini and maxi marital issues and we see events, from each of their points of view, in alternate chapters.
