A single question kick-starts the journey for this book.
My Muslim cousin came to stay with us in the UK when he was over on holiday from Pakistan. I knew his stay would prove contentious as previously he had told me that as a Muslim I had to believe in all of it as it stood, otherwise simply had to admit I was no longer a Muslim. This time I was prepared for the inevitable question of “Why?” I had subsequently left Islam. Sure enough it soon came and started the ball-rolling for a long night as he attempted to refute each one of my contentions, but this time to no avail.
The following day, prior to boarding his flight back to Pakistan, he made me promise one thing. As he was well connected, he asked me to put all my arguments together in writing so he could take them to a learned scholar of Islam. I did so, and looking forward to his response I also copied in all my siblings. After waiting 3 months my brother received a phone call from my cousin saying that he hadn’t forgotten and was still working on the reply. It’s been 8 years, and I never did hear back from him.

Nonetheless it was an invigorating exercise. Over the course of these subsequent years I became an ex-muslim activist and the original letter (contained in Chapter 2) was used as a skeletal working document which I regularly updated with new findings. A comprehensive Scribd online blog was born. It was heartening to see it climb to 46,000 views and being powerful enough to influence many of its Muslim readers to leave Islam.

To connect with a wider audience, I developed the blog for use in visual media and from it spawned my ‘Ex-Muslim Confession’ YouTube series. It flourished as it climbed to half-a-million hits and my group which grew to 7,500 (now 20,000) members, but along with its success so did the harassment. My more vocal presence was paralleled with increasing resistance, reaching up to 139 death threats to date.
Undeterred this spurred me on to make the blog ever more mainstream, and the original Letter-Blog-YouTube Series finally matured into the Book you see before you today..

An essential guide for believers (of all faiths) and non-believers alike.

Saif Rahman has done for the Quran what Dawkins did for the the Bible, i.e., both are shown up for what they are .. primitive claptrap that can’t stand up to serious scrutiny.

I used to be a practising Christian – for much the same reason that Saif Rahman used to be a practising Muslim: we were born into our faiths and brought up to accept them as the true path.

I congratulate Saif on starting to question things in his teenage years. I regret to say that it took me over 70 years to question my beliefs and to re-read parts of the Bible with an adult and questioning mind. It was hard (really hard) to abandon the life-long comfort blanket of religion, but now I am happy to tell anyone I’m an atheist, and I do feel strangely liberated!

People (especially politicians) made all sorts of bland statements about Islam, especially differentiating between "moderate" and "extremist" Muslims. They criticise jihadists for practising a perversion of Islam. But you need some knowledge of what is actually in the Quran and the Hadith before making such statements. In fact, to my mind, the jihadists' beliefs are not that much of a perversion. It's arguable that they are closer to the Quran than the so-called "moderates".

To make a start on a greater understanding of what Islam is all about, this book is essential reading to Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that, I'm sorry to say, because of rather a large number of spelling mistakes (misprints?) or missing words that detracted from the overall sense. For all that, it is informative and educational.

While I agree with the main thesis, I found several mistakes in this book. In some cases, the English translation of some of the Quranic verses are completely wrong, with key words added that are not in the original Arabic version (e.g. Surah 33, verse 55). In other cases, the author uses Quranic verses completely out of context, and in some cases the original context (if you read the verses preceding the one quoted by the author) is the exact opposite of what the author meant.

As you read through the book, you also get the impression that this book has not been proof-read before it was published.

Nonetheless, most of the author's criticism is still valid in my opinion.

This is a very impressively researched book. I was transfixed and read it in a day. The author carefully and methodically references all the ideas in a way that lets it speak for itself. His commentary is also useful and puts the various quotes in context.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Perfect for someone who has very little knowledge and those whose knowledge of Islam is more extensive.

Im an atheist from a Christian heritage. I've been reading books for years that critique the bible and have never come across many authors who are willing to to do the same with Islam.

I found out about this book on twitter and bought it on impulse after asking the Author, I read it over the course of 5 days and found it a fascinating glimpse into Islam from someone born into it and his disillusionment and eventual departure from it.
It is well written, easy to understand and very informative.
