Beautifully sparse interpretations of Van Morrison classics from 'Astral Weeks'. Plus original songs from this wonderfully talented artist.
Jaki Whitrens' singing takes me to a higher plane!

After waiting about thirty years for a follow up to her debut 'Raw but Tender' album, Ms Whitren has not come up with the goods again on this rather dissapointing and somewhat boring album. Yes, the voice and the soul is still there but the whole album is just Ms Whitren singing to her own keyboard backing which I found after about four tracks began to drag a bit. Also the CD came in a cheap and nasty cardboard case which I literally had to rip open to get at the disc. Pity because 'Raw but Tender' was a classic that I still treasure and is now avaiable again on CD format.

`ISIS UNVEILED'- Jaki Whitren. Album review - Jan Allain 2009.

This much longed for solo follow up to Jaki Whitren's debut `Raw But Tender' in 1973 was well worth the 33-year wait. Did I just type that? To be honest I went through most of my life in a kind of bemused dismay that Jaki Whitren wasn't bigger than Persil and wondering where the heck she had disappeared to. I have now accepted that she is a stunning underground jewel, always was, and always will be. So it gives me great pleasure to review `Isis Unveiled' and I make no apologies for my indulgence.

Oh to write an article or review for this album like the one by Peter Ackroyd on fine artist Dennis Crefield entitled `Form and Fabric'. A few years ago, I discovered the most exciting parallels between Jaki Whitren's `Isis Unveiled' and the work of Dennis Crefield.
Crefield was commissioned by the South Bank Board in 1987 to draw all the cathedrals of Europe. This he did by winding his way across Europe in a beaten up old camper bus returning with a wonderful and powerful collection of charcoal drawings. The brilliant Mr Ackroyd discusses these works with great insight.
Peter Ackroyd refers to Dennis Crefield's cathedral drawings as `affirming spirit of place'. He talks about how `having a sense of place is to have a sense of history'. I have seen the cathedral drawings close up and if you look at them long enough, without interruption, you can begin to feel the sense of eternity in the stone, a sense of spiritual history and of overwhelming greatness. Not of religion but of time and human existence. A great big soulful feeling basically.
