I think this was the first novel by this author that I read: Isabel receives a good and independent inheritance from her aunt, she arrives to a small town in the West to take care of it, where she finally plans to be independent of any men in her life. This works to an extent, she helps a local girl, starts taking care of things, however, a rather meddling local sheriff decides she needs helps and occasionally starts bossing her around, sometimes even applying old-fashioned discipline. From time to time, it becomes a bit too much in my opinion, hence my rating '4' instead of '5' but mostly the guy keeps her happy and safe. I liked that she is not weak or stupid and that most of the time he is not too overbearing.

This story is about Isabele who felt unappreciated and taken for granted, after taking care of her brothers in the years since their parent’s death. Her Aunt passes an inheritance of some property and money to Isabele, giving her the chance for a new start in another Town. At the beginning Isabele had no confidence in herself but loved to write stories, which her Aunt had secretly been publishing on her behalf (I thought it was a shame though that there wasn’t more about her writing stories during the main part of the book).

Upon arrival, a mistaken identity at the train station results in Isabele hitting one of the town residents over the head and thus she meets Sheriff Hutch. Isabele soon meets Sarah, a young girl in the new town who has been stigmatised by the town, after being raped. Isabele takes Sarah under her wing and together they get into a number of incidents. Sarah is also central throughout the book and I enjoyed reading her story along with Isabele’s.

I thought the speed of the book was consistence throughout the story and I enjoyed getting to know the characters in the book. Due to it being a full length book it allowed you to learn a lot about different people in the town and the interactions between them without it getting confusing. The story seemed well thought out and it didn’t jump from one unconnected story arc to another.

The book was very well edited and I would recommend this book

I received this as an ARC for an honest review.

This is a great book with a really substantial number of pages. The story's eponymous hero, Isabel Piper is an aspiring writer who has found herself trapped in a life of thankless drudgery playing housekeeper and cook to her four brothers following the death of her parents.

When her eldest brother decides to take a wife who has even less regard for Isabel than her brothers do, she decides to leave and begin a new life as an independent woman, made possible by a hitherto unknown inheritance and and several new unexpected income streams bestowed on her by her wealthy aunt.

Thanks to this, Isabel's new life in Overton, Colorado comes complete with a small fortune in the bank and a substantial interest in half the town's businesses.

As a new female in a male-dominated town, Isabel is the focus of plenty of men's attention. None more so than Deputy Bill 'Hutch' Hutchinson, the town's conscientious lawman.

Isabel and Hutch don't get off to a great start especially after Hutch spanks Isabel for endangering herself and then steals a kiss in front of the biggest gossip in town. Isabel may not be wholly convinced by Hutch but it is plain to see that Hutch has been head over heels with Isabel since the moment he laid eyes on her.

Circumstances, of course, push Hutch and Isabel closer and closer to one another. Isabel befriends Sarah, a teenager who has been abused by the local playboy and then shunned by the whole town. And the three of them become a close family unit. There are plenty of characters in this story. Some better drawn than others. The one bum note was the minister and his wife's story which I didn't think brought much to the book.

I had no expectation that I would enjoy reading this book. I was doing so as research for someone else and spanking! Oh really! To my surprise this was an engaging novel of a much put upon young woman starting a new life. Although capable and loving she still has much to learn about just how to behave and who better to to teach her than Hutch the town sheriff. There are some interesting passages about marriage and how men and women need to treat one another. There is plenty of drama and spanking which actually work well in the plot. Historical detail abounds and I loved the character of Isabel. A good read.

This has an interesting plot with many constantly changing events. There is action, romance and several social issues. It has all of the ingredients of a good novel. However, the writing needs to be more succinct to be really successful. There is too much detail about mundane, everyday activities and this does not move the story onwards. The dull writing style spoils what could have been an exciting novel
