Even though I'm not a cook, I'd always wondered how Mrs Beeton's cookbook came to be so famous & this book tells you. A slow start & I thought this is going to be a bit boring but it got going when starting to tell you about the family & who they married etc. I think I lived in the same square that they lived in in London if it was still the same house! (Monkey puzzle tree in the garden the clue). Not necessarily for cooks, more for those interested in social history. They did come across lots of people as they became well-known. A surprise of a good read.
