This is a wonderfully fun and highly entertaining book - and heralds great things for the new series.
The writing is good, and the ease into the world of publishing is smooth and understated. Great start and it never falters. I read it straight through the night (which I may be regretting later today!) because I was invested in the outcome, and the journey to get there from the very beginning. By having most of the men in happy relationships, it was so easy to make the office atmosphere full of banter and wit, rather than excessive angst- which was both refreshing and great fun. I enjoyed the sports side too, which was interesting from the journalism viewpoint. As the story progresses and things heat up, it is impossible not to be swept along, and by hearing their thoughts, it adds both to the amusement and the frustration at them both.
If you want an entertaining, fun, sexy and very satisfying read - this will definitely bring a smile to your face. Thank you Ms Layne for a winner!

One-Sentence Summary: A sexy freelancer and a tomboy go head-to-head for an editorial position at a magazine
Review: Reading a Lauren Layne book is like eating a tube of Pringles: once you pop, you can’t stop! You gorge yourself on the feast for heart and mind and then when it’s all over you end up in withdrawal because you have to wait another 6+ months for the next book in the series.
Well, I have been looking forward to Cole’s story since the moment we first met him in the Sex, Love & Stiletto series and I am pleased to say it didn’t disappoint.
Cole smiled. “Penelope. Are you physically shaking it off right now?”
“Don’t judge, it helps,” she said.
He lifted his arms and mimicked her motions so they were both flapping like birds. “You’re right. It does.”
“What are you shaking off?” she asked.
Cole shrugged. “Nothing. I’m flawless.”
There was throat clearing from the doorway and she turned to see Lincoln Mathis watching them with raised eyebrows.
“Oh, hi, Lincoln!” She let her arms drop to her sides.
“Oh, hi, Lincoln!” Cole mimicked in a breathy voice.
She ignored him, mostly because he had a point. She probably had been a little breathless, but it was one hundred percent justified ………
…… Penelope felt a blast of misty water hit her cheek and turned around to see Cole holding a blue squirt bottle. “What are you doing? That’s for misting my plants!”
“You looked hot,” he said with a shrug, setting the bottle aside.
Penelope is a sport fanatic who is up against Cole for the position of senior sports editor at the highly successful Oxford magazine.Read more ›
Basic story: Cole Sharpe is a high-flying sports editor who, after years freelancing, is finally ready to become a staff member at Oxford magazine. He has his reasons for needing the job and has been assured he’s a shoe-in. It soon becomes clear however, that he isn’t the only contender, and his competition is the perky, diminutive and tomboyish woman he was eyeing up at a recent ball game. Cole finds her fascinating. And she’s not his usual type. At all.
Penelope Pope (isn’t alliteration great?) eats, sleeps and breathes sports. She moved to New York from Chicago for a fresh start and is desperate to land the job at Oxford. She’s not bothered about being one of the few females on staff, she’s used to a predominantly male environment. She’s always been one of the guys and is comfortable remaining in the friend zone. When she gets to know Cole, she sees no reason why this would be different. The Cole Sharpes of the world do not go for awkward, skinny women, not when there are glamazons at every turn. He’s easy on the eye and could just be her first friend in the Big Apple. So what if his sexy smiles warm her on the inside and his presence gives her goose bumps. He’s way out of her league.
Soon the pair are spending almost every moment together and the idea of friends with benefits may not be so far-fetched after all…
Why you should read it: I love Lauren Layne! If you have read the Stiletto series (which focuses on the women who work at Stiletto magazine, Oxford magazine’s sister publication) then you will definitely want to read this. Cole was a peripheral character in the series, so it’s great to see his character in greater depth. I liked Penelope, low self-esteem notwithstanding.Read more ›
Penelope Pope is new in town, having moved to NYC form Chicago when she realised that she was in unrequited love. She is a tomboy and loves sports and is determined to start a new life. She knows that Cole is good at his job and has been a regular at the magazine for a long time, but she's determined to get the job.
Here-forth starts a rivalry that escalates into something neither of them were expecting. Penelope has self delegated herself into the eternal friend zone, and Cole finds himself attracted to a woman who is the complete opposite of his usual type.
I enjoyed reading this book, as I always do with Lauren Laynes' books. It was a light fun read, low on the angst and drama, sweet and sexy with likeable characters.
This is book 1 in a series of stand-alones, told in dual POV.

I've said it again and I'll probably say it every time I read one of Lauren Layne's books...these are, hands down, some of the most intelligent, fun, entertaining contemporary romance stories on the market today. Every single book I've read of hers has been just brilliant with characters that I fall in love with. I smile almost the entire time I read because her dialogue is always spot on and witty and just so intelligent. I always feel better, happier, for having read one of her books.
This one was no different, but what was different in this book was Penelope. Wow, I LOVED her.
The Oxford series is a spin-off from the Stiletto series. Both these books are built around the high-fashion, high-social life of the NYC magazine scene. Oxford is a men's magazine and they've decided to expand their sports section to a significant portion of the magazine. To achieve that, they need an editor for the job. Cole, who's been working freelance for the sports section of the magazine for years, should be a shoe-in for the job, but that's before Penelope applies.
Penelope is the antithesis to this group of characters that have made appearances in the series. She's a transplant from Chicago and is not one of the beautiful people. She's a tomboy completely obsessed with sports. She's one of the guys. Cole calls her Tiny (I LOVE his nickname for her) because she's a diminutive little thing, completely lacking in feminine curves. In other words, NOT his type at all. But she adores sports as much as he does and he's fascinated. Add to that, she's just an upfront girl...what you see is what you get. She's genuine, doesn't play games, and is truly a nice person. She's a good friend...so why is he so turned on by her?
Honestly this is just one of those books that's a pure joy to read. My one issue with Lauren Layne books is that they end. I hate watching that countdown on my kindle when I know the book is going to end because they are just so much fun to read. The snappy dialogue and the beautiful people are fabulous, but I loved this one because the girl next door got the playboy. Cole has been around the Stiletto girls for a long time as their resident manwhore. I loved watching him fall in love. It was a GREAT book. Now, I'm ready to find out what's behind Lincoln's facade...something happened to him and I'm dying to know what it was. Who broke his heart? The scenes with him hurt my heart. I can't wait for his HEA.
I highly recommend!!
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Sigh... so much love for the Oxford men, loved Irresistibly Yours!
Can't stop smiling, loved Cole and Penelope.
From the first page I was hooked, I fell in love with the storyline and characters. I read it in one sitting.
The chemistry between Cole and Penelope was believable and well written, loved their banter and humor, it really added to my enjoyment of the story.
Once again Lauren Layne has written a heartwarming and entertaining romance with lovable and relatable characters that will touch your heart and leave you with a very satisfying smile on your face.
I highly recommend this book and everything else this talented author has written!
