In March 1966, Ironside broke new ground in television programming by introducing the potential new series as a world premiere feature length movie. The response was overwhelming.
Raymond Burr, fresh from 9 years as TV s Perry Mason, starred as Chief of Detectives Robert Ironside, shot down by a sniper s bullet while vacationing at a remote cabin. Surviving the assassination attempt, Ironside is left paralysed from the waist down. Confined to a wheelchair, he becomes the head of his own special police unit, fighting crime with intelligence and action, aided by crack team of investigators on the streets of San Francisco.
From 1967-1975, Ironside confronted the hottest issues of its time - civil rights, drugs, hippies, rock n roll - giving television its first disabled hero and star Raymond Burr (Perry Mason) a second major television hit. Ironside s inaugural season attracted many special guest stars - including Harrison Ford, Bruce Lee, Jack Lord, Susan Saint James and David Carradine among many others - as it began its eight-year run as destination television for millions across the globe.
