Having watched the highlights of the IronMan event in Kona over the years I vividly remember the rivalry between Dave Scott and Mark Allen. Long before the current hi-tech triathlete scene, these guys really were pioneers. Matt Fitzgerald captures the energy (and exhaustion) of the event along with a captivating back-story for each character so that we get to see so much more than than the one-hour highlight shows. A must for anyone interested in the history of the sport and endurance events in general.

I was bought this book for my birthday. As a "recreational Triathelete" I thought it was fantastic. Really well written and interspersed with interesting views on the motivation to do, and succeed in endurance sports.

I think this is well worth a read if you're interested in Triathalon or not - the story is that interesting and well written.

I've been doing triathlon for just over a year now and I'd heard little bits about these two guys. Firstly, as a story I'd give this 4 stars. Matt Fitzgerald is clearly passionate about the subject and he talks about the race and it leaves you on the edge of your seat.

The best bit about this book for me was the science stuff and in particular the chapter on what marks these two guys out as "more" than others. Fitzgerald talks about a guy called Sam Marcora who did a study on Exercise Fatigue and it's really insightful but explained in simple terms. Basically it's about how we can always dig that little bit deeper than we think we can and it's not the muscles telling us "no", it's the brain. I did a ten mile run shortly after reading this chapter and I was able to push myself that little bit harder and clocked a great time. Seriously, it's worth reading.

I had already completed my first ironman prior to reading this but I had no idea of the real history of the sport... This spells it out but not in a boring history lesson style.... This tells the tale of the greatest era of ironman and triathlon racing ever.... Dave scott vs mark Allen.

Dave is all about working harder than the next man. Mark is all about finish, aero and technology.... You can feel the pain on the guys faces as you read the words.

Breathtaking and very inspiring to anyone, especially the budding triathlete!

Loved it! Excellent story and insight into the minds of two top triathletes, now just trying to find another book in the same vein. For those new to triathlons it gives a great insight into the world of a triathlete though at Ironman level, would thoroughly recommend.

Found this book by accident and it's not only a good read but very inspiring. I met Dave Scott last year having no previous knowledge of who he was as I took on my 1st 70.3 triathlon. He was a gentleman and gave some great advice. Reading this book as a newbie to the sport gives great insight to the world of triathlons elite but it's amazing how easy it is to relate to as an amateur. Would highly recommend this book.

The content of the book and main theme are riveting but it could have been better written. Worth buying and reading, Matt Fitzgerald is an accomplished coach / athlete so he has extensive knowledge but it probably would have packed more punch had it been co-authored.
