Review

"Practitioners of martial arts or related exercises will find this essential." (The Midwest Book Review, Sept 2006)

"Chia demonstrates his expertise in the field of chiropractic, medicine, Taoist yoga, sexual mystery and martial arts in such way that he feeds a medicinal and mystical understanding to the practice that can only stimulate the practitioners of this art to a deeper involvement and encourage the reader of this manual to take up this art." (The Cauldron Brasil, Feb 2007)

From the Back Cover

MARTIAL ARTS / HEALTH Long before the advent of firearms, Iron Shirt Chi Kung, a form of Kung Fu, built powerful bodies able to withstand hand-to-hand combat. Even then, however, martial use was only one aspect of Iron Shirt Chi Kung, and today its other aspects remain vitally significant for anyone seeking better health, a sound mind, and spiritual growth. In Iron Shirt Chi Kung Master Mantak Chia introduces this ancient practice that strengthens the internal organs, establishes roots to the earth's energy, and unifies physical, mental, and spiritual health. Through a unique system of breathing exercises, he demonstrates how to permanently pack concentrated air into the connective tissues (the fasciae) surrounding vital organs, making them nearly impervious to injuries--a great benefit to athletes and other performers. He shows readers how once they root themselves in the earth they can direct its gravitational and healing power throughout their bone structure. Additionally, Master Chia presents postural forms, muscle-tendon meridians, and guidelines for developing a daily practice routine. After becoming rooted and responsive, practitioners of Iron Shirt Chi Kung can then focus on higher spiritual work. A student of several Taoist masters, MANTAK CHIA founded the Healing Tao System in 1979. He has taught tens of thousands of students from all over the world and tours the United States annually, giving workshops and lectures. He is the director of the Tao Garden Integrative Medicine Health Spa and Resort training center in northern Thailand and is the author of 25 books, including the bestselling The Multi-Orgasmic Man.

I studies in Thailand with Mantak Chia and this book is part of the set. If you want the full benefit of the system invest in the other books.

This is a very well writen instruction manual with out to much gloss and 'bigging up' of the author. It sets out the main exercises and techniques needed for starting postural breathing and energy storing that are essential for proper fitness and especialy martial arts training, without this side of training the learning of technique and Kata is pointless. Chi Kung/Qi Gong/Ki Jitsu is the fundermental building block of all martial arts bar none! This book is just right for the begginer or the advanced martial artist and you will feel the diference imediatly, it will be like having a torch and only just learning that it needs batteries - the diference is that big!! Good reading and more power to your elbow.

I've been learning 88 step yang form tai-chi and this book complements the chi kung energy cultivation side of tai-chi quite nicely. Some of it is a bit ropey (I have a MSc in neuropsychology so love science that's well referenced), but the main ethos/message is very good.

This book forms part of Master Mantak Chia's Daoist curriculum. It has lots of photos and diagrams to accompany the text. For those looking for an introduction to Chi Kung (qi gong) this is an excellent book but practical training with an instructor is needed to benefit from it.

To start with, I had been suffering quite severe hip and lower back pains for several years which I got from trauma in sports. Yoga or therapists only helped me to reduce pain for a little while, however, my problem persisted. Later I was taught practices described in this book by master Mantak Chia in one of his seminars. Surprisingly, after a few months of rigorous practice, my back and hip pain was gone! I totally recommend these practices for everyone with back problems as it helps tremendously to improve your life quality. However, this book should be used only as handbook after being taught by an instructor. I hope this helps :)

It needs to be read and then practised in stages of weeks and months as the author says. He will also say that you need to have previously read his other book the inner smile.
