Product Description

Review

'The name Peter Kilduff on biographies of World War I German aviators is far more reliable than the name Sterling on silver...This is a moving book, well illustrated, with useful notes and index. Kilduff presents the battle scenes well and does a particularly effective job in pointing out the problems in establishing who scored which victory, when and where, even when given access to the war records of both sides.' --Walter Boyne, Aviation History<br \><br \>A really first-rate book about the German flying Ace by a well-established and much respected historian. This is the most comprehensive account of Germany's sixth highest scoring fighter Ace. --The Great War Magazine<br \><br \>This book would be invaluable for students of WW1 military aviation and it is a fascinating read for the general reader. Highly recommended. -- Dr Geoffrey Miller >
Kilduff's care in explaining the story well extends to the photos he uses in the book - many incidents are supplemented with photos and if there is no photo of the exact plane used, he'll include a photo of one from the same squadron. Finally he's very good at explaining what the aviators were doing to support the ground war - which is why the air forces existed in WWI. Peter Kilduff's Iron Man is not only great history, it's a great story. --Australian Society of WWI Aero Historians<br \><br \>In this very well researched book, renowned American aviation historian Kilduff has produced a painstaking and worthy tribute to a truly remarkable life. For anyone interested in WWI aviation, this book is a must. --The Bulletin of the Military Historical Society

Grub Street is at its best, publishing accurate and detailed information on WW1 aviation. Peter Kilduff is acknowledged as a leading authority on German aviation of that period. Put the two together and the result has to be something special. This is an excellent and interestingly told biography of one of Germany's most respected fighter pilots... Definitely a book to own if your interest is in German aviation. --Cross & Cockade International

In terms of academic rigour, this book, with its extensive endnotes, providing as they do not only source credits but extensive additional details, will satisfy even the most critical scrutiny. In sum Peter Kilduff has done a masterful job of capturing the exploits of Iron Man Rudolf Berthold, the man and his legacy. Highly recommended reading.--Canadian Military Journal <br \><br \> This very complete account of Berthold's life concentrates on his First World War experiences. It contains useful appendices and a good bibliography. --The Aviation Historian

About the Author

well named, RB was it seems totally driven in his task to be a successful fighter pilot, pushing himself through serious injury more than once, to survive the dangers he did and then to die in the way he did was a very sad ending, but I think he would have found it difficult to adjust to peace?

The facts were all there, but I detected a political trend in the authors writing which I felt was inappropriate and not related to the textual history.
