There is not really much point elaborating on all the reviews of the original album - put simply Irish Tour is one of the best live blues rock albums ever recorded and very effectively conveys the sense of excitement that accompanied the series of gigs in Belfast, Dublin and Cork in early 1974. By the time Gallagher hit the shores of Ireland, he and his band had become a very tight unit, honed by many months of touring in the US and elsewhere on the back of the Blueprint and Tattoo albums.

Were I simply reviewing the original album, this would be an unqualified five stars. We have all been waiting for years to hear an expanded version of Irish Tour with recordings from the individual gigs. However, listening to this box set, it becomes clear why basically the entire original album was based on the gigs in Cork. Gallagher faced a more than minor logistical hurdle, in that it was not until they reached Cork that the mobile recording unit they had hired really got into gear. As result, the engineers had to improvise a fair bit to get the Belfast and Dublin gigs onto tape. And it shows. It does not diminish the excitement, but just keep your expectations in check if you are planning to play the extra material through anything other than a basic sound system, as some of it comes across as superior sounddeck bootleg standard.

On top of that, the package is quite frankly on the flimsy side - quite why is difficult to comprehend as this is one set where people are unlikely to have been put off spending an extra couple of quid to get something a bit sturdier.

Having said all that, this is something that Gallagher fans are going to lap up and it is great that twenty years on from his untimely death, the interest in his work remains undiminished.

This record is over 30 years old now and it has not dated so much as a minute. Rory's playing was inspiring, brimming full of energy and love for his craft ; it shows on every single song recorded here, whether it's soaring blues licks peeling the paint off the walls, gritty blues riffin' making the audience stomp the floor to hell or laid back accoustic work, it's all here. He was a legendary live performer, the real deal in every respect. If you weren't lucky enough to see him live, this record will convince you of that and if you did, then this serves as a welcome reminder ( hardly needed of course ! ) to his immense talent and our massive loss. You won't buy a better blues guitar recording anywhere - ever ; go buy & enjoy.

Rory Gallaghers guitar took him and his audience to another place, and this album captures perfectly the atmosphere and the bond between Gallagher and his fans. Gallagher live - nothing else comes close!

My jaw dropped when I heard this album, it is quite superb. The guitar playing is astounding, and for a live album the band and sound are incredibly tight. It has to be one of the best live albums of all time.

Beware this vinyl release! This concert is one of the best live shows of its era but this particular vinyl release is dreadful. There are 2 versions of this concert doing the rounds. This version (also available on CD but with a different cover) is from an inferior master. Also the track 'Just a little bit' is missing from this release. Also note that '74 is missing from the front cover, it should say 'IRISH TOUR.. '74', it doesn't! Worst than that is the sound quality itself. What you get is a dreadful background humming sound on many parts of this recording. If you want the real deal get a copy of the original polydor release or the 180g re-release (not sure what label it's on), it'll fetch you around £25. I came across this the other day brand new for £8, DO NOT TOUCH IT!!!
The official CD digipack release that came out a few months ago with 'IRISH TOUR.. '74' on the front cover (red on a silver background) is also from the proper master.

I know I'm ranting but this concert is absolutely brilliant! These companies that bring out inferior releases of such classic performances as this should not be allowed to get away with such terrible crimes. Rory would be horrified and so should you.

Please, please, please seek out a proper release of this, you really do owe it to yourself :-0
