Remarkably readable historical analysis of the war in Iraq; a must read!

For anyone wanting to really understand Iraq, Joel Rayburn has provided a remarkably readable and detailed analysis that clearly explains historical and cultural trends, the drivers of Iraqi politics, and the many facets of the communal conflict. I have read most of the books written on Iraq and without any doubt, the depth of knowledge and insights explaining Iraqi politics and events from an Iraqi perspective is what makes this scholarly contribution so important. He brings new information and insights to the fore while bringing to life the socio-cultural-political fabric of Iraqi life. It is a very readable explanation of the sectarian, authoritarian and Islamist resistance trends that dominated politics over the past ten years. "Iraq after America: Strongmen, Sectarians, Resistance" is a must read for those interested in understanding why America failed to grasp what was really going on in the country and also helps explain the great difficulties in responding to the current phenomena of the rise of the Islamic State. Importantly, Rayburn brings new insights about the Iranian-Shia militant regional agenda that is as threatening as AQ and ISIS over the long term.

I bought it on Kindle because that was the quickest way to get a feel for history setting people up for future ambushes after the library copies of the book were missing. Political movements which build their own ability yo put large crowds in the street when what is going on otherwise could be noticed by disrupting everything brought about street warfare in Iraq and thoughts of civil war. Parties which had been outlawed by previous authoritarian regimes learned to function in secret and keep their own cash flow hidden after getting responsibility for reconstruction that was obviously needed but rarely satisfactory. I am satisfied with the facticity attempting to describe military and police security for an area like Green Zone controlled by the top level of government, but I am glad I never go there.

I feel this book, Iraq after America: Strongmen, Sectarians, Resistance (The Great Unraveling: the Remaking of the Middle East: Hoover Institution Press Publication; No. 643) Kindle Edition, provides the reader a good concise understanding of the politics of Iraq, to supplement our daily dose of news coverage of what has happened and is continuing in the region. A thorough coverage of the issues being played out and allows one to see how the expansion of the war after Americans disrupted this power based control of this area of the NE Middle East and explains the role of the Iranians, who are ever present when Iraq's power structure by the Sunnis is removed. It would be helpful if our members of the Legislative branch of government would read this.

Very important book for understanding the politics of Iraq, especially the role of the Shia factions. I use this as a university text. Best thing on Iraq politics so far. Also explains in depth the role of the Iranians. I wish that our senior military and political leaders would read this.
