Plug and play it wasn't for me

I had all sorts of problems setting this item up. Apparently my network didn't suit it and it wasn't adaptable enough to cope. I got there in the end but spent hours online/on the phone to Iomega support, who were very good, and even replaced the original item, though I am not sure there was anything actually wrong with it. It was just horrible to configure. Now I have it set up, it seems fine but unless you are used to 'fiddling' with computer and network settings (or you have the 'right' type of network) I think I would look at something else.

Seen some mixed reviews for this drive but here's how it went for me.

1. Connected it
2. installed the drivers
3. used it.

So far this drive has proved awesome in all it is advertised to do.

My network see's it fine as does my ps3 slim.

Remote access works great (it Zip files everything you download which takes a bit of time plus i can't see how to turn this off)

Set up and use is a doddle. Truely i am the biggest network thicko i know and i had no issues getting this up and running and setting up users etc.

Heard some people say they had isues with Noise, Windows 7 but i have had none. I am using Windows 7 64 bit and it ran no wories at all.

I was especially suprised to see it sitting there on my ps3 ready to be used and it saw all the folders once i set them to DNLA in the settings.

If i have one complaint it is that the IE based user interface is a bit temprementle sometimes and seems to freeze or stop working properly but it hasn't been a major issue. I did have to re map the folders once as they vanished but all was good once i did it and none of my files were lost as others have said.

Noisy!

I bought this about a year ago. On receipt the item was so noisy I thought the disk was broken so I sent it back. Amazon replaced it within 2 days (full marks Amazon). The replacement seemed a bit better so I kept it.
Set up is quite easy, and the item does look very good. I found the bundled software temperamental and ended up uninstalling the backup software as it refused to work more often than not. The Iomega works quite well with my Norton backup software.
The real problem is the noise. Imagine a woodpecker inside the unit constantly and randomly tapping away. It does this all the time including all night which is a little disconcerting as all the computers were off! I had to move the unit out of the bedroom as it was dreadful. Even in the living room it can be heard tapping away over the volume of the TV! It is a shame as I think it does it's job very well. I think the Internet connectivity is a great idea even though I haven't had to use it much. All in all a good product spoiled by the noise problem.

OK for PCs, not so much for mac

I bought this server so I could back up my work from my mac and store music from itunes. It works fine with a PC, plugs and plays but to get it working with my MacBook Pro has been challenging. It took me ages to launch the server on the mac and it doesn't automatically connect to it each time. Also I cannot get it to work with Time Machine nor the program that comes with it Retrospect to make it back my work up automatically. I admit I am using it through wi fi so this is the main cause to all the above problems, but what is the point of having the server linked by a cable near my laptop? Its been weeks since I've installed it and I have to back up manually.
Perhaps I was a bit too ahead of my time, trying to get this to work through wi fi and with PC and Mac but its still a good purchase if you are happy to use cable to connect to create automatic updates for Macs.
On the plus side, its very small and quiet and hasn't crashed since we bought it!!

A complete disaster - the software and drivers caused chaos.

I had been looking forward to having a central filestore for all the computers in our household. When the Iomega 1Tb drive arrived it looked good and was well built. I then started to install it.

During the running of the installation CD my computer suddenly shut down with the "Blue Screen of Death". I was unable to use the computer again until I had re-started it in Safe Mode and done a System Restore. Puzzled, I tried again to install the Iomega software, but with exactly the same result. I contacted Iomega to explain the symptoms and, after a week without response, I was asked to download new software form the Internet and install it.

The new software worked. I now had the Iomega Disk visible and usable, although I was a little shocked to find it had used six (I think U: V: W: X: Y: Z:) drive letters for the subdirectories of the single disk drive. Crazy! It had, in doing so, overwritten a couple of drive letters I was using. As I took stock of this and tested the disk function by successfully copying a few files to the Iomega drive I noticed my Internet connection was becoming intermittent.

I then realised that none of the other household computers had an Internet connection. I worked on these problems for an hour or two and tried rebooting the computers and the wireless router, but nothing worked any longer. (You may be wondering, so let me say I have had 30 years of daily use of computers and would regard myself as competent! All of the connected computers were running Win XP and were networked via a Netgear router: all had been trouble-free.) Nothing I could do would put things right. So I removed the Iomega disk and Iomega Home Media Network 1TB Hard Driveuninstalled the software. I then spent quite some long time on reinstatement work on our various computers. I returned the Iomega disk via Amazon who, to their great credit, gave a full refund including all transport charges. I felt very sorry for the retailer.

So, Iomega, I award you one point for your disk, its software and its drivers. To you, readers, I suggest you think very carefully before buying one of these.
