This is a beautifully illustrated book. Its greatest strength is in covering just 15 years of this subject. It surveys a broad variety of artists with succinct essays, which are excellent tasters for further, in-depth research. A superb addition for anyone interested in the studying the early foundations of abstraction in painting, sculpture, design and lens-based media. Also a comprehensive springboard for practitioners who believe that the modernist ideology did not die, but still has much to offer our understanding of Arts' place in society.

Bought this new at an excellent price so make sure you shop around on Amazon. It's a large, heavy book in both design and content. It has more than enough colour plates of artists' work and lots of excellent info about individuals and groups. It has written contributions by over 20 learned individuals and most are entirely readable. However, this isn't a book to dip in and out of - you almost need to start from the beginning and work your way through. Although having said that the chapter on Mondrian must not be missed. I can honestly say this book tells you EVERYTHING you will ever need to know about abstraction.
