About the Author
Pat Mills is the creator and first editor of 2000 AD. He developed Judge Dredd and is the writer-creator of many of 2000 AD’s most popular stories such as Sláine, Nemesis and A.B.C. Warriors.
Amongst his credits are Marshal Law (Marvel and DC Comics), co-created with Kevin O’Neill, the French graphic novel series Requiem, Vampire Knight with artist Olivier Ledroit, and Be Pure! Be Vigilant! Behave! The Secret History of 2000 AD and Judge Dredd. His current projects include Joe Pineapples: Tin Man, illustrated by Simon Bisley and Clint Langley, Spacewarp, and Kiss My Axe! The Secret History of Sláine the Warped Warrior.
One of the most prolific writers in the comic’s history, Gerry Finley-Day holds a special place in many 2000 AD fans’ hearts as the creator of classics like Rogue Trooper, Fiends of the Eastern Front and The V.C.s, as well as Harry 20 on the High Rock and Ant Wars.
A keen “ideas man”, Finley-Day’s concepts of the horrors future warfare had in store were key to both Rogue and The V.C.s’ continuing popularity, ensuring that their recent return to the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic was well-received.
Finley-Day also scripted episodes of Judge Dredd and Dan Dare, and co-scripted much of Invasion! (and entirely scripted the prequel story, ‘Disaster 1990!’).
Jack Adrian’s real name is Christopher Lowder. Over the past 50-odd years Christopher Lowder has used maybe a dozen or more pseudonyms, and had a few
more foisted on him. He’s written SF, westerns, men’s adventure (for paperback carousels in the rust belt), weird tales, war fiction (WW1,
WW2, Vietnam), Regency romances on the High Toby, comicbook scripts (including Dan Dare. Judge Dredd, Adam Eterno and Kids Rule, O.K.), private eye stories, horror and fantasy. He’s edited upwards of 40
mystery/weird anthologies, including a dozen or so posh ones for Oxford University Press. He’s written for the Literary Review, the Times
Literary Supplement, and for nearly two decades he was a regular obituarist for the late and very much lamented Independent newspaper.
Currently he is Chair of Cradley Parish Council in Herefordshire -- which should be a warning to you all.
Jesús Blasco is considered one of the most significant artists in Spanish comics. He created Cuto for Boliche magazine and produced several science fiction and adventure titles. In the 1960s he joined the British publishing agency Fleetway and worked on Steel Claw, Billy the Kid and Buffalo Bill amongst others.
For 2000 AD he provided the art for several episodes of Invasion!
Mike Dorey joined 2000 AD following its merger with rival action comic Tornado, where he pencilled Victor Drago. Following his move to greener pastures, he pencilled several Future Shocks and a Time Twister, as well as M.A.C.H. 0, M.A.C.H. 1, Ro-Busters, Invasion!, Rogue Trooper and Tharg the Mighty.

This is one of my favourite graphic novels, and, given the violence (and the smoking), I cannot see newsagents being allowed to sell it to today's 5 year olds as it was sold to me back in 1976, but we weren't so coddled then, and that's not a bad thing.
Dark, gritty, pulling no punches and ultra violent, what more could your average adolescent want? I remembered most of the storyline from 30 years ago, which probably shows you how it affected me at the time, it covers the quasi Russian invasion of Europe and the UK, in an alternative timeline. Britain is down but not out as slowly the resistance hits back. If you enjoy alternative Sci Fi you will like this, go on you know you want to!
It gets off to a great start and what child in the late 1970s can forget the imagery of Volgan paratroopers falling from the skies and of the English Midlands being destroyed in a nuclear burst with the survivors being murdered in cold blood and most memorable of all the full page diagram that shows the underground British resistance base . This melds war porn with future scenario something any self respecting schoolboy in the 1970s would love
The downside is that after the first five episodes all written by Pat Mills there's little in the way of progression. The evil Volgans plan something very evil and Bill Savage and the resistance turn up . kill the evil Volgans and then escape . Repeat every week for almost a year
In order to allay the repetitive nature of the story different writers such as Gerry Finley Day - a prolific writer of war stories in IPC titles such as Battle - and different artists the 2000AD editors do try and bring a bit of variety to the strip but like the Volgans they're probably fighting a battle they will ultimately lose
I did enjoy this volume but much of this was down to nostalgia and while I might be able to forgive the one note idea behind the premise I can understand a younger and more critical reader being less forgiving especially if potential customers are being asked for over £200 for a second hand physical copy. You can of course but a digital copy for about £10 at the 2000AD webshop
