Having used QB Pro & Payroll 2005, I needed to update to 2008 to continue to get updated Payroll Tax Tables.
Bought this updated version of 2008 on the recommendation of QB only to find unlike its earlier versions (2005 & 2003) it no longer does multi-currency. As a business trading on internationally and considering we are part of the EEC this is pretty poor software design by QB.
DO NOT buy it if you need multi-currency!

We also had to purchase to get continued payroll updates and had endless upgrade problems which were never satisfactorily resolved. I have recently had to deal with a monthly paid employee on SMP and QB wrongly calculated the period of SMP due. I have spent hours on the helpline trying to get a resolution and it still isn't solved. This is quite a fundamental error and I have no confidence that the payroll side of the programme is operating correctly.
As a bookkeeper I have used QB for several years now and whilst I have some reservations, I find it quite intuitive for smaller companies. However I think this latest version has been very poorly implemented and tested, and the ommission of the multicurrency feature is shortsighted in the extreme.

I have used Quickbooks to prepare accounts for my small consultancy business for the last 6 years. The software is ok but Intuit's business practices leave a LOT to be desired. When I first purchased their payroll software, it seemed reasonably priced. But because my company began to depend it, Intuit forced us to pay considerably larger annual fees (the increase was 140% this year) and to pay for several expensive software upgrades (every two years approximately). If you run a small business, by all means buy the accounting software, but I suggest you should avoid being tied in to Intuit's payroll solution at all costs.

I, too, have problems with 2008, having upgraded from 2006.I only needed an upgrade for payroll. I buy from Europe and the invoices are zero rated. Having previously used the ES VAT code I find I can no longer use this code. 2008 uses an EGS VAT code that is not available with cash VAT accounting systems. I spent 30 minutes on the helpline only to be told that is how the program is designed. Nothing on the box or in the book tells you this. If you buy or sell with Europe don't buy this product.

I originally bought Quickbooks in 2003, and then paid about £120 a year to renew the payroll feature. This ensured that the program continued to be updated with changes made to the PAYE system of taxation. In 2005, Quickbooks forced users who wished to retain the payroll feature to completely upgrade their software by refusing to support the payroll feature on the previous version of the software. This, of course, is really just a big con to force people to buy the software again. They then pulled the same trick in 2008, only this time the software simply did not work. I won't bother reiterating in detail the shocking and painful experience I had with customer services. In short, I ended up having to go back to using the previous version of the software, and use the Inland Revenue's free software to calculate the payroll. This causes a lot of extra work because you then have to manually create your own wage slips and enter PAYE information into Quickbooks. After two years of this, I intend to switch to Sage at the end of the financial year. This is a real pain because I will have to re-enter all my customer details etc., but I would rather suffer the inconvenience then ever deal with Intuit, the makers of Quickbooks, again. I thoroughly recommend that anyone considering buying Quickbooks thinks again. This product is dire.
