David Currell's books are the best available on the craft of puppetry. This is one of his older books but offers all the instruction necessary to make glove puppets, rod puppets, shadow puppets and marionettes. Clear, step-by-step instructions are given on constructing the puppets and stringing them. There is also a short chapter on stage construction. There are very few tips on dressing the puppets but characterisation is dealt with.
Currell's newer book on making marionettes is a fantastic book for anyone specifically interested in marionettes. However, as a post-primary teacher, this older book is more useful as it deals with a range of puppet types which can be adapted to the ages and abilities of a broader age range. It more than serves its purpose and has a permanent place in my resource library.
