Product Description

Review

'This introduction to 'the liveliest aspect of all that lives' (as Konrad Lorenz famously called behaviour) covers all the angles one would expect from a biologically oriented approach. It will be of tremendous value to any student seeking to explore what questions this field of research addresses and the many useful insights and concepts it has developed.' Frans de Waal, Emory University, Atlanta

'Combining the best of classical ethology with modern developments in behavioural biology, the sixth edition of a famous textbook is enormously welcome. I strongly recommend this beautifully written and illustrated book to students of all ages.' Patrick Bateson, University of Cambridge

Book Description

Now in full colour, this revised and updated edition of Manning and Dawkins' classic text provides a beautifully written introduction to the fundamentals of animal behaviour. Illustrated with fascinating examples of complex behavioural mechanisms, it includes clear explanations and concise, readable text and retains the author's enthusiasm for their subject.

Format: Paperback
"Introduction to Animal Behaviour" is the sixth edition of a very successful textbook on every aspect of modern ethology, from classical studies to the latest developments in every field of ethology. It covers behaviour from insects to primates and from nervous systems to the organization of behaviour in individuals, social groups and in ecosystems. The authors, Manning and Dawkins have kept the four questions posed by Niko Tinbergen, causation, evolution, development and function as their structural frame; there is no better way to introduce the subject. It aims at students but its breadth allows scientists to see what is happening in the many different fields of ethology. This was my own gain from a pleasant reading; it was the detailed coverage of every area that brought me up to date. I would recommend this book to students and colleagues.

Bought this book for my foundation degree in animal behaviour and welfare which will really come in handy! This book is very detailed with 7 large chapters, informative and backs up all information with examples and coloured pictures. It also provides a short summary after each chapter...sort of like an abstract if you want to dig out key points from each chapter. It is a bulk of a textbook that will really help with studies or general curiosity.
