This book is a must for anybody who is after the history and philosophy of Marxism. It is a very easy book to read and has illustrations on every page (just to get the idea over) which makes for an entertaining and educational experience.

At first, I will admit I was a little sceptical about how the book would perform. I think what's clear is after only 5 or 10 ten pages into the book that.. it's concise and gets straight to the point. Almost like a nicely written fact file turn story. Before I go into detail about the actual content, I will just add - The illustrations on each page are quite good with alot of attention focused on the presentation of the book. Now, the actual content is good. I think for me, a semi-amateur on Marxism.. it definitely provided me with some backdrop information aswell as development of his ideas. However, if you thought it was purely to do with Karl Marx - Obviously there is alot to do with Hegel.

Target Readers: Students and first time'ers ( It provides enough information to develop a philosophical debate on I think )

I am not a Marxist but I am a philosophy student so this does give me a bit of
license to say that this is a masterful little introduction to this stream of thought.
It is surprising what can learn from these guides it really is.

What I know about Marxism could cover a postage stamp. Through a process of osmosis one gleans certain things from different sources but nothing firm. What I did know for certain was that Marx was a difficult writer and a hard read. This book, though I bow to any Marxist scholar here with an informed view, really opened up my mind to what Marxism was/is about especially by placing it in context to Hegel and his ideas and then going beyond that to cover the latest theories. Yes it is an introduction, I certainly don't consider myself anything other than a novice based on this book only. But as an exercise in educating and engaging the reader it really works. It is an accessible format but still a great read, hence my five star rating.

The title gives the impression that this book will explain Marxism in simple terms. I would argue that it does not. It references lots of philosophers etc for no clear reason and is written in an unclear way. There are many words in this book that are difficult to understand and are not explained properly. On the plus side, I do have (a very basic) understanding of Marxism from this book. I couldn't write more than a paragraph about it though.
