Before I get into the slight "mystery" surrounding this release, here's a bit of a comparison between the new MOC & my previous "go to" copy, the 2002 Kino. The Kino runs 3:17, the MOC is 2:47 The Kino also has a 4 minute Orson Welles intro, & a couple of shorts that are totally eclipsed by Disc 2 of this set.

Picture quality: This destroys the Kino by comparison. While I'm aware that a reviewer I refer to in high regard below states the differences in picture quality are minor, I completely disagree. For those of us who already own it, The Kino may be worth keeping for the extra 30 minutes, but just barely.

On the other hand, I found the restoration a bit too "soft" (lack of detail) for my liking (note the key here is "a bit", NOT "alot"); in some ways I preferred the look of the unrestored features of the "Modern Story" & "The Babylon Story" stand alone features despite the unremoved scratching & lack of tinting. They're not as clean, but in places they have a tad more detail. The good news is that here you get both versions!

I can't confirm or deny "keviny01's" comments from last year about the Image entertainment edition, as I've never seen it.

This seems to have the same content as the 2013 Cohen version (much more on this below): on disc 1 you get a 2:47 cut of Intolerance; on disc 2 you get separate extended feature length cuts (that I didn't know existed) of "The Modern Story" with Mae Marsh & "The Babylon Story" with Constance Talmadge. Apparently, there were no feature length cuts of the other 2 interweaved stories.

I find this both a gift & bit of a curse: On the plus side, us collector's LOVE extra material! Also, especially with the Modern Story, each version makes the other easier to understand.

Intolerance feels remarkably fresh and exciting for a 100 years old film! And it still looks amazing, no wonder it was the most expensive movie of its time. Recommended to all cinema lovers.
As for the video quality - no quibbles here. I know movies from the 40s and 50s that dont look this crisp.
I haven't seen all the extra content, but there is plenty, plus a very nice 40-page booklet which I found very interesting and informative.
All in all, a great buy.

Mr. Turner makes a good recommendation of the Cohen Blu-ray release of this film, but I think I should point out this is NOT the same as the upcoming Masters of Cinema release to which Amazon in their infinite wisdom have chosen to attach his review. Readers should be warned I think. Mind you, looking at all the extras attached to the MoC package and going by my experience of this excellent company's releases this looks very tempting indeed and may be bought 'blind' without worry. I am especially looking forward to seeing a spanking new transfer as well as the two films that originally supported the main feature's release. When I receive my copy I will review it more fully. For now I give it a prospective 5 stars simply to give this fabulous film all the help it can get...

I took a risk purchasing this bluray as available info gave contradictory views about whether the disc would play just on US blurays.

Some said it was region free and as I had no problems with the Cohen bluray on a UK only player thought it was worth a punt.
Thankfully I can confirm there were no problems at all.

So what you get is a very good beautiful print as mentioned by Kevin Brownlow in the short but informative talking head extra provided. This is accompanied by the unbeatable Carl Davis score in either 5.1 DTS-HD.

Also there are 2 alternate versions of the fall of babylon and mother and law, non-tinted with less impressive score, but still interesting for the alterations and extras.

Although not quite up to the blu-rays I have which I consider to be the pinnacle so far of silent blurays, ie Kino's The General and Paramount's Wings, this is likely to be the definitive home version of Intolerance for years to come.
