Picture quality: This destroys the Kino by comparison. While I'm aware that a reviewer I refer to in high regard below states the differences in picture quality are minor, I completely disagree. For those of us who already own it, The Kino may be worth keeping for the extra 30 minutes, but just barely.
On the other hand, I found the restoration a bit too "soft" (lack of detail) for my liking (note the key here is "a bit", NOT "alot"); in some ways I preferred the look of the unrestored features of the "Modern Story" & "The Babylon Story" stand alone features despite the unremoved scratching & lack of tinting. They're not as clean, but in places they have a tad more detail. The good news is that here you get both versions!
I can't confirm or deny "keviny01's" comments from last year about the Image entertainment edition, as I've never seen it.
This seems to have the same content as the 2013 Cohen version (much more on this below): on disc 1 you get a 2:47 cut of Intolerance; on disc 2 you get separate extended feature length cuts (that I didn't know existed) of "The Modern Story" with Mae Marsh & "The Babylon Story" with Constance Talmadge. Apparently, there were no feature length cuts of the other 2 interweaved stories.
I find this both a gift & bit of a curse: On the plus side, us collector's LOVE extra material! Also, especially with the Modern Story, each version makes the other easier to understand.Read more ›
As for the video quality - no quibbles here. I know movies from the 40s and 50s that dont look this crisp.
I haven't seen all the extra content, but there is plenty, plus a very nice 40-page booklet which I found very interesting and informative.
All in all, a great buy.
Some said it was region free and as I had no problems with the Cohen bluray on a UK only player thought it was worth a punt.
Thankfully I can confirm there were no problems at all.
So what you get is a very good beautiful print as mentioned by Kevin Brownlow in the short but informative talking head extra provided. This is accompanied by the unbeatable Carl Davis score in either 5.1 DTS-HD.
Also there are 2 alternate versions of the fall of babylon and mother and law, non-tinted with less impressive score, but still interesting for the alterations and extras.
Although not quite up to the blu-rays I have which I consider to be the pinnacle so far of silent blurays, ie Kino's The General and Paramount's Wings, this is likely to be the definitive home version of Intolerance for years to come.

A truly great silent film, with spectacular settings that could equal the special effects of Cecil B. de Mille.Published 1 month ago by artdealer
I love old and new movies, CG laden movies like Avengers to 100 year old silent movies. That is why I love this movie, in its day it was an event. It is a masterpiece in cinema. Read morePublished 4 months ago by Lokii
Absolutely dreadful Discs, not into silent movies, especially a mix match of silent trailers. They provide not one but two discs of this vintage rubbish. Read morePublished 17 months ago by L A mcdonagh
