'young teenagers will be gripped by this supernatural thriller ... an impressive work for the 12+ age group ... offers thrills alongside an important, but understated, lesson in humanity'

(SFX magazine)'..this is a pacy supernatural thriller in which suspense and intrigue are excellently created.'
(Book Fest)'the literacy skills inherent in Celine’s first novel The Poison Throne and fully enhanced by the two remaining novels of her Moorehawke Trilogy have now been further enriched by what, in my opinion, is her most impressive fiction to date ... Those episod
(Robert Dunbar)'I am so impressed with Celine Kiernan’s imagination and writing. I loved how the tension in the story slowly builds up until the reader suddenly finds themselves in the middle of a full blown nightmare ... a very realistic finale ... I love Celine Kierna
(goodreads.com)'Celine Kiernan's mastery of imagery and ability to enthrall, will keep the young adult spellbound in her new novel Taken Away ... Kiernan sweeps the reader along, weaving the 'other world' into this novel with ease ... would recommend it as being suitabl

Right from the very first sentence, this novel pulls you into a dark, emotional tale about a brother who is going through something incredibly traumatic. We start this journey finding out about a goblin boy and the family house burning down. What follows on from this is an incredibly eerie story full of creepy, tense moments that have you, quite literally, sitting on the edge of your seat. I found the plot to this book was excellent. It kept you on your toes, had you wanting to beg for mercy, and truly left a chilling feeling in your spine. I quickly found it difficult to put this book down, as well as rapidly finding myself emotionally invested in this story. Celine Kiernan has definitely worked this plot out exceptionally well.
One of the other reasons I continued reading this book was the truly realistic characters that were portrayed so well it was impossible not to find yourself emotionall invested in them. While all of the characters in this novel were well-written, my favourite character was Patrick. Patrick is a character who doesn’t feel strong without his twin by his side, he is a character who is lost but will stop at nothing to find what he’s looking for. Throughout his journey it is easy to see how strong he really is, but that didn’t stop me from wanting to hug him and tell him everything was going to be okay! Pat has his flaws, such as temper and fear but this just makes him so much easier to emphasize with. I guarentee you’ll just want to help him!
As I made my way through this novel, I couldn’t stop myself from falling in love with Celine Kiernan. I have not read the trilogy she wrote before this book, but I’m certainly intrigued enough to give it a try at some point in the future and I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more books from Celine. The reason for this is because I really enjoyed the writing style of this book. It is unique and compelling – not to mention supports a grand story – and it is just easy to see that Celine is a truly talented writer. There was never too much description, never too much much dialogue, and she just managed to capture the emotions of her characters so well. It just made it so easy to empathise with them, bringing forth many emotions and I think that is an absolutely amazing thing to do within a novel. She also managed to truly bring tension into the novel, helping to make it more entertaining and creepy. I, for one, will definitely be keeping my eyes for more books by her.
If it isn’t clear by now, I absolutely loved this book. It pulled me in from the very start and I couldn’t stop turning the pages. It had an amazing back story that was fully formed without any odd plot holes, it was incredibly creepy and eerie and it was just everything that I love in a good thriller/horror novel. I loved the idea of the Grey, and the naievity of Francis. I thought it was all really entertaining and truly horrific. It is a book that I would highly recommend to others and one that I am extremely glad that I tried. It is also a novel that I would happily read again. If you’re looking for a horror novel that will make it difficult to sleep, or a YA novel that just really packs a punch and is full of emotional intensity, then you should definitely give this book a read! This new book from Celine Kiernan will terrify your psychosis in a good way.
It's well written, the characters are real, flawed, messy, fun human beings. The dialogue is authentic and moving. The relationship between the twins is electrifying and deeply engaging. I loved the parents, struggling to do their best by two generations of the family, balancing an elderly, confused granny and young children, like so many of us in "the sandwich generation" - although the book is set 40 odd years ago, this is a universal theme.
I'm not going to wait for my children to become "young adults" before I read more from this wonderful author.
