I liked Cara as a character even if she had the odd whiny moment because she knew what she wanted and she fought for it. Logan seems like your typical bad boy, leather jacket and gets all the girls but once he meets Cara you see a different side to Logan Schmidt.
The story definitely ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, but that has made me hungry for more and I thoroughly look forwards to getting my hands on the second book of this series!
Kelly Hashway certainly knows how to craft a story to pique my interest. She has me hook line and sinker with the first page and always leaves me yearning for more. I am having trouble waiting for book two to come out. I'm not impatient, per se, I just don't like to wait when I know a series is going to be as amazing as I know this one will be.
Kelly has a way of pulling me in to her stories and making me feel like there's a live-action movie playing in my minds eye. The way she shows you the story instead of just telling it, that's probably what I like the most about her.
Fans of YA, love stories and unique selling points, INTO THE FIRE is the book for you. You'll fall in love, you'll laugh, shout at your kindle/book and if you're anything like me, there'll be tears too. Make sure you have tissues ready just in case. Oh and if there's some tool to pry your heart out of your throat, grab one of those too.

We start with Cara, who is a phoenix, and so is her family. And several town members. But we begin with her watching her brother die and then be reborn. There's a kick, when you are reborn, you forget everything. And in her little freak out about her brother, she accidentally meets Logan.... who she imprints on. Well imprinting is kind of like a mating, but not and but so. LOL It's complicated, because you don't have to finish the imprint, you can chose to forget them. But dude, I would NEVER want to forget Logan either. :) It was fantastic because you get to see both Cara and Logan's POV. Cara is a wonderful girl. She seems like she was always the good girl, made the right choices, followed the rules, took care of everyone. And Logan, he's a sweet boy, but he's going through a heart time with the tragedy in his life. I don't understand his dad's issue- where the hell is he all the damn time. Seriously. And Cara's- her mother may be looking out for her best interests, but I hated her. She went about it all the wrong way. And she never helped herself. It was madness.
And I loved the friends that surrounded Cara, and her brother Blake, and Logan's hilarious friend from NY. And the reason I mention these people is because they don't know about phoenixes, other than her brother. Yet, they still play a pretty big role in their lives. Cara spends a serious amount of this book freaking out. She is trying to deal with the fact that her brother doesn't remember her, her mother hates Logan, she's going to be reborn and forget Logan, oh oh and someone is killing off phoenixes around them. I was seriously sad with the first murder because I really liked that character. I also really liked Monique, and her very fun cafe. :) And the hawt kisses. But I am looking forward to seeing more lore and back story about the phoenix lore and their ancestors.
I am fascinated with the writing. The author definitely made me stick to every page. I was dying to know what was going to happen. And I am heartbroken at the ending. Things are really serious. And there is a cliff hanger so prepare yourself. But dammit it's so awesome. There's so much twisting and mystery and suspense so you won't be able to put this one down. I am salivating to get my hands on book two and I am scorched by this one! Gimme gimme!! I gotta know! :) 5 FIERY PAWS!!!
First of all, I loved that this book is written in alternating first person POV. It's not an easy feat to pull off. You have to know which character perspective to write from for each chapter, to best capture all of the tension for each point along the way. Kelly did an amazing job with this, and I was delighted to see her pull off a convincing male character in Logan, among others.
As I read, I got hooked and drawn into the story, and I didn't mind the excessive kissing all the time. I might have flinched like the boy in Princess Bride, whose grandfather comes over to read him the story, and he asks glibly: "Is this a kissing book?" The answer is: most definitely, YES.
I loved the concept of the race of beings who appear human, but are actually descendants of Phoenixes. I have a penchant for phoenixes, and dragons. In fact, I've got a tattoo on my right upper arm from my shoulder down to just above where my shirt sleeve ends above the elbow. Sure, a glimpse flashes here and there, and I've been asked about it more than once, but I love my tattoo of a dragon entwined with a phoenix, and the meaning. I hope book 2 and 3 will explore the Phoenix lore a bit more. While it was referenced well, throughout the book, I did want more, but I guess there wasn't much room because, you guessed it. Kissing. That's way more important, anyway.
I found the traits of a phoenix, before first rebirth and beyond, fascinating. Some traits are positives, like healing, and the shriek. Other traits are not so great, like forgetting everything from your former life, and the fact that there are Hunters bent on stealing the life force or essence from a phoenix to gain prolonged life and eventual immortality. This definitely raised the stakes when Phoenixes started "going up in flames" due to a Hunter on the loose.
At the center of the story is Cara, who must face her first rebirth just when her life finally delivered the boy of her dreams, and she's convinced the premonition dream she keeps having holds the key to finding a way to avoid forgetting about the boy she can't stop kissing.
The climax was horrific, and brought me right to the end, with a cliffhanger that left me begging for more, despite the elevated heat scorching me with every flickering page. This is a must read series for male and female readers alike. I thoroughly enjoyed Kelly's characters and how her chapters are riddled with plot twists and huge stakes. I have a few ideas where I think the next book will go, but I'll wait to discuss until after you've all read your copies and told all your friends to get copies as well.
5 out of 5 stars, or shrieking phoenixes, because, you know, phoenixes.
Highly, highly recommended. A must read.
Cara Tilllman watches as her brother burns to ashes and rises again. They are Phoenixes. Cara watches carefully as her brother begins his second life because Cara's rebirth is coming soon.
Who wouldn't want to have a second life? A Phoenix who doesn't want to forget. Cara has met a wonderful guy, Logan, - and is totally in love with him. They can't stay away from each other, but Cara's mom has warned Cara to keep her distance from Logan.
With Cara's rebirth getting closer every day, a danger lurks in their quiet little town. Cara's very life is in danger. What no one suspects is that the Hunter who is chasing and killing Phoenixes is closer to them than they realize.
Once you pick this up, you won't be able to stop until you read the last words!
