Incredible book from an incredible man. From a young age he stood up to bullies including his abusive father & took this strength and sense of justice into his service with the RUC. In his CID role he put many terrorists in jail but met huge resistance from the bullies that even the vicious murderers were afraid off - the special branch of the RUC who protected their “bigger picture” with little or no regard to the rule of law.
Hoping for a follow up book as mentioned.

Product description
Synopsis
Johnston Brown was hailed by Martin Dillon as "the superb investigator who was central to bringing 'Mad Dog' Adair to justice." According to Dillon," ...the day [Brown] publishes the story of life in the RUC, from the troubled 1970s to the 1990s, a veil will be lifted from the undercover war ..." "Into the Dark" is that story. Johnston Brown served in the RUC for nearly 30 years. Recruited into the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) only two years into his service, he quickly established himself as a detective of outstanding ability. He was to lead the investigation into the murder of solicitor Pat Finucane, and it was he who was responsible for finally bringing Johnny Adair to book. Brown was, however, quickly to discover that he was up against another even more deadly enemy than the criminals he was pursuing: those sinister elements of RUC Special Branch who for reasons of their own were determined to thwart his success. Brown found to his cost that they would stop at nothing to do so."Into the Dark" offers a gripping insight into life in the RUC: the day-to-day reality of policing the streets of West Belfast during the dark days of the PIRA hunger strike, and what it was like to be a detective stationed in the "killing fields" of North Belfast during the 80s. The narrative lays bare some of the key terrorist personalities, as well as those operating within the Special Branch to pervert the course of justice as a means of asserting internal control.
About the Author
Johnston Brown was born in Holywood, County Down in 1950. He joined the RUC in 1972 and served as a police officer for almost thirty years. He resigned in April 2001, after a bomb attack on his family home. He has a daughter and two sons, and now lives in Co Antrim with his wife Rebecca.

An excellent book by a man who was an outstanding CID detective during the worst of the Northern Ireland Troubles. In addition to dealing with some of the worst serial killers, The Troubles had produced he also had to with a perverted Special Branch who seemed to have lost all sense of decency during that era.

An amazing book!! From what I can work out from other sources the author (Jonty Brown) really did this! It's amazing to think this could happen in a Western democracy BUT it did!! Jonty Brown clearly had a shocking childhood which may explain his grit but his early life is skirted over!!
There is a very small element of his life in uniform which in my view should/could be expanded to cover these days! However even in the early days he seems to run in to real problems with Special Branch!! In essence the Special Branch seemed to run the entire RUC and they seemed to want to support Loyalist terrorists as a military support to the RUC/British Govt/Loyalist community! Jonty wanted to arrest and prosecute any and all criminals - including those protected by the Special Branch!!
The entire tale is shocking!!
You WILL enjoy the book!! It will however frighten you to death!! The left wing love to moan about a corrupt Police force but when you genuinely see one in action (or elements of corruption) you will feel your self panic!!
Jonty Brown seemed to do his best and got some great results!! He prosecuted people you will have heard of!! Serious players!!! He gives great detail - more than I would expect!! For those not familiar with Police books/work he could have done with explaining Source work a little more but that's my only gripe!!
If you want a Police book! If you want to shake in your boots!! This is the one for you!!!

Quite obviously a man who spent some time at the sharp end but, to what end and what expense? Was it all worth it?
