Interview With The Vampire: Number 1 in series Paperback – 8 Dec. 1994

4.4 out of 5 stars 9,056 ratings

In a darkened room a young man sits telling the macabre and eerie story of his life - the story of a vampire, gifted with eternal life, cursed with an exquisite craving for human blood. Anne Rice's compulsively readable novel is arguably the most celebrated work of vampire fiction since Bram Stoker's Dracula was published in 1897. As the Washington Post said on its first publication, it is a 'thrilling, strikingly original work of the imagination ...sometimes horrible, sometimes beautiful, always unforgettable'.

Anne Rice was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, which provided the backdrop for many of her famous novels. She was the author of more than 30 books, including her first novel, Interview with the Vampire, which was published in 1976. It has since gone on to become one of the best-selling novels of all time, and was adapted into a major motion picture starring Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Kirsten Dunst, and Antonio Banderas. In addition to The Vampire Chronicles, Anne was the author of several other best-selling supernatural series including Mayfair Witches, Queen of the Damned, the Wolf Gift, and Ramses the Damned. Under the pen name A.N. Roquelaure, Anne was the author of the erotic (BDSM) fantasy series, The Sleeping Beauty Trilogy. Under the pen name Anne Rampling she was the author of two erotic novels, Exit to Eden and Belinda. A groundbreaking artist whose work was widely beloved in popular culture, Anne had this to say of her work: "I have always written about outsiders, about outcasts, about those whom others tend to shun or persecute. And it does seem that I write a lot about their interaction with others like them and their struggle to find some community of their own. The supernatural novel is my favorite way of talking about my reality. I see vampires and witches and ghosts as metaphors for the outsider in each of us, the predator in each of us...the lonely one who must grapple day in and day out with cosmic uncertainty."

Anne Rice is a master storyteller. A true genius. She draws you in to a world of the supernatural with incredible details and truly amazing characters who will stay in your memory long after reading the book. The book has been made into a film and a TV series which inspires a new generation of readers. If you are fascinated by vampires and their relationship with humanity you will love this book which I wholeheartedly recommend without reservation!! It’s incredible!! Enjoy!!

In the words of Lestat: Stop whining Louis!

The problem with creating a great, original work is that everyone copies you and, eventually, you look just as derivative as anyone else who writes about vampires for whom eternal life is a great torment they can only assuage via romance with children. I’m taking the piss a little bit (just a little, and mostly out of other books), but Anne Rice changed the vampire genre and, forty years later, thousands of words of Louis complaining of the agony that comes with killing is a little tired.

I was in the forces; I can promise you there are people that kill and then sleep fine. It is absolutely something you can get used to. Plus, I’m totally ready to take a shot at living forever: there are plenty of men and women out there killing for a mediocre salary and a uniform, which is by any standard a much worse deal.

Yet the passion in Rice’s first novel is still there. In later novels she becomes more professional, writes tighter script, but there is something to be said for the way she pours everything she has into Louis endless indecision, doubt and despair. Accept him as he is – as he tells you he is – a deeply flawed protagonist, indulge in some eternal adolescent anguish, and there is a lot to enjoy.

Plus, this book is it. Without Interview with the Vampire you don’t have Buffy, you don’t have Twilight, you don’t have True Blood. If you are at all a vampire fan, then you must read this book.

This is my second time reading Interview with the Vampire. The first time was a long time ago. The book is one of my all time horror reads. The film I've seen multiple times and like the book is one of my all time favourites. The tv series is also very enjoyable.

The story is about a journalist who interviews a vampire. Louis the vampire tells his story from when he became a vampire, his time spent with Lestat and then when Claudia and Armand appear.

The book has no chapters only parts. This means the story is one long tale told by Louis. It's very dense and wordy and although it's my favourite I really had to push myself to continue. The narrative does go on and on as Louis tells his tale. The story does improve when Claudia's character comes into the story.

The film is very much like the book which is a bonus. There is nothing worse than a film based on a book but doesn't stick to the story. Anne Rice herself did have a lot to do with the film so I believe.

As much as I love this book I have struggled with other books by Anne Rice. I've tried The Witching Hour, The Vampire Lestat and The Wolf Gift and have DNF all three.

This vampire tale is for me a classic. Very different to Dracula and so much better than the sparkling vampires in the Twilight books. I love the gothic feel that the book offers.

Maybe I might in the future carry on with the series another go, but in the meantime Interview with the Vampire is enough for me.

This first novel I read by Anne Rice was "The Mummy, Or Ramses the Damned" which I first read in 1992,(it's been read more then once). Then I noticed she'd written a series called "The Vampire Chronicles", and with being interested in that subject and enjoying the previous book I read by her I decided I'd buy the first 5 novels in the series.

I'd already seen the film back in the 1990's, but couldn't remember much about it. Just before my books arrived the film was on TV again so I watched it again. The film left me with many questions, I felt there was a lot left out especially were the deaths of Claudia and Madeleine were concerned. After watching the film I started to read the novel.

The journey begins in the 20th Century as a young lad is interviewing a vampire as he wants to tell his story so others will know. His name is Louis Pointe du Lac and as the interview unfolds we find out why he became a vampire and a about the vampire that made him who is called Lestat. But Louis is no usual vampire, he's different and Lestat doesn't like it.

The interviewer asks all kinds of questions and Louis tells him of how he finds the child Claudia and why he makes her a Vampire. Lestat teaches them both about being a vampire; he keeps a tight hold on both Louis and Claudia which leads to arguments and death. Here I will leave the story as I don't want to ruin it for you.

Anne Rice is a powerful writer; her characters are always believable and have great depth to them. Her descriptive work and plots are fantastic, and never disappoints the reader. :-)

The story grips you from the start, and with every turn of the page she draws you further into the story, it's a compulsive and enjoyable read. :-)

I highly recommend the book as it's far better than the film. :-)

I'm now looking forward to starting the second novel in the series which is called "The Vampire Lestat", and I'll be starting that as soon as I've finished this review. :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars The one, the only vampire book after the great "Dracula"
Reviewed in Germany on 21 May 2014
And whoever feels comfy enough to read books in English - please do so when it comes to this one. None of the two German translations has ever really grabbed the full impact of Rice's original bizarre and utterly compelling mix of old-fashioned and 1970s English. Listen to the true voice of the vampire and you may get it why this book has become a so-called "modern classic" (something nobody in their right mind would say about the rest of Anne Rice's vampire books). It will make you smile, shake your head in disbelief, groan and laugh out loudly. Admittedly, the story gets much darker towards its end and unfortunately the lighter, ironic notes are finally completely lost as it starts spiralling into that realm of vampire fantasy Anne Rice's works will subsequently inhabit.

The unusual protagonist has been called "the original Emo" and "the vampire for the goodies" but that's actually more due to the rather santanized film version in which Louis is not allowed anymore to show his tendency for aggressive mood swings (not just constant whining) and physical violence (at one point of the novel he smashes Lestat's head with a poker, screaming something along the lines of: "Die, bastard.")
Well, yeah, and the homoerotic stuff has also been more or less eradicated in the film version. It's still telling, however, that Lestat chose a man as his companion and these two never even consider making two female vampire to keep them company. Instead Lestat even creates a five year old vampire "daughter" for them and from this moment on their whole relationship drifts quite openly to something which looks remarkably like a married couple (with Lestat as the dominant male and Louis as the submissive female) until their "daughter" starts a revolt against Lestat (having realised that she can easily manipulate her "mother" to meet all her needs but not her strong-willed and egotistic "father".).
This is also the part of the novel which meanders the furthest from a vampire tale and seems to become a parable for the struggle of a grown-up daughter against her abusive, uncaring father and the similar awakening of the apathetic mother in support of her only child.
After that, as mentioned above, the story dugs deep into vampire lore and stays there. Talking about the rest would be too much of a give-away. Let's only say that Louis definetely must be gay (no matter how Rice changed her mind about him in later installments) as he voluntarily chooses a male partner again after Lestat's demise and reacts rather shocked and almost disgusted when his daughter Claudia wants him to "make" a female companion.

So why this book? Because it's a unique blend of at least three completely different storylines which seem to belong to various genres (becoming a vampire, coping with the new situation, female rebellion against male dominance, the exploration and invention of vampire lore).
Readers who are looking for a more conventional adventure story with a vampire as the central character should perhaps skip this one and start reading the "Vampire Chronicles" with "The Vampire Lestat". There you'll find your average loud-mouthed sparkling hero who sets himself above everything and thoroughly enjoys being a vampire.
