Product Description

Review

'I have been using this book since it was published - recommending it to undergraduate and postgraduate students both as the definitive account of the IPA approach and as an accessible introduction to experiential qualitative research more broadly. The chapters on designing an IPA study, collecting and analysing data, and writing up an IPA study in particular are excellent...This book remains an invaluable addition to the toolkit of resources for teachers and students of qualitative research, and I thoroughly recommend it to both' -
Psychology: Learning and Teaching, Volume 9, Number 1

This book is one of the most useful I have come across. I am a PhD student and, as such, do an awful lot of reading around this particular method of data analysis, as it is the one I am using. The first part deals with theoretical foundations and methodology, the second illustrates actual examples and the third part is around issues of validity and quality, with a reference to future issues. Of particular interest is Chapter 5, which takes us through a step by step analytic process, without becoming too prescriptive or limiting innovation and creativity. To be recommended.

An antidote to the voodoo of SPSS and the perennial compilation of stats, along with the washing of figures to fit within the templates - an alternative can be viewed here. IPA is the antithesis to the clipboard researcher who is distanced from the world.

So within there is an exploration of a new form of research stemming from Husserl, Sartre, Heidegger and Merleau Ponty.

Then it details how to take the research forward and gain legitimacy by basing it on the methods outlined in this book.

I brought this book, as i am in the middle of writing my dissertation. unfortunately, not many lecturers understnad or have used IPA as a form of analysis before. This book has been so useful it has given me a step by step guide and has been my bible over the last couple of weeks. Thank you Mr Smith, Flowers and Larkin!!! I would have liked to have seen an article on using specialist populations such as children, vulnerable adults or forensic populations. Otherwise this is brilliant! Go buy it

The book is excellent, very accessible, clearly written and well explained and for that I would give it 5 stars without a question. I bought the Kindle as I have noticed that some of the books I need to read for my doctoral program are now on kindle and it must be a more sustainable way of reading those books one chooses to buy. The reason I am giving such a low rating is because although on the kindle one can regulate the size of the fonts, the book includes some tables which appear in such a small font - no doubt in order to make them fit the space available - that they are totally unreadable! And ... the option of increasing the font is not operational for those tables! I cannot understand how this passed the quality control of the publishers, as this is totally unacceptable!

This book offers a detailed overview of the theoretical background of IPA together with a clear step by step guide of using IPA in research. There are also examples of good quality IPA studies and critical evaluations of the IPA methodology. An essential guide for anyone unfamiliar with IPA but wishing to conduct an IPA study, whether this be for undergraduate study or established researchers.

With the help of this book I was able to design, conduct, write-up and publish my first qualitative study. Even with a background in research, information about IPA from various sources can be confusing. However, I found this book clear and to the point. The authors make good use of examples from their own research to illustrate points they have made. Advice ranges from planning your study to the write-up.

The first author of this book is Jonathan Smith, and it's an understatement to say he knows what he's talking about with IPA! I work in a clinical setting and cannot recommend this book highly enough to fellow clinicians, experienced/novice researchers, as well as students.

I am a doctoral student in the US who is using IPA as the method to study the lived experiences of older mothers who live with their adult sons who have intellectual disabilities. I found IPA as I was looking for a phenomenological methodological approach to my topic. This book is enormously helpful as it clearly articulates the theoretical/philosophical underpinnings of IPA. In addition, it outlines a methodological approach to IPA without being too formulaic or rigid. Certainly some of the contents will be familiar to those who have read as much about IPA as they can get their hands on (like me) but having it all in one place is fabulously helpful.
