As well as having a driving plot line, The Internet Date explores the often transient nature of today's relationships borne out of social media and dating sites. The story holds up a mirror and seems to be asking for a deeper, more resonant (but still vibrant) version of life for those who live and work in a modern city. Especially effective and interesting is the depiction of the fathers and their children caught up in all this modern noise.

I was lucky enough to see the play on which this book was based – and this is even better! There’s even more drama in the novel than there was on the stage – as if that’s possible – and I really enjoyed the depth of the insights into the mood of London as the recession started to bite and cause even more uncertainty in people’s love lives. Dark and totally compelling.
