This chip has TWO physical cores. It utilises hyper threading to allow the OS to treat each core as multiple cores, but it isn't a quad core chip. Seriously Amazon, this is pretty poor. Change the title.

Great value chip though.

I wanted a no-frills low-to-midrange gaming friendly workhorse CPU so that more money could be put to the GPU, and this CPU is pretty much it (today's games are still more sensitive to clocks than number of cores). It's not the fastest nor cheapest, but it does give you the best performance/price ratio, as far as Intel processors go currently. The next serious step would be a Core i5, but that is significantly more expensive and can help only if you do video editing or heavy compiling, while going any cheaper would net you a much weaker CPU with minimal additional savings. The stock cooler is not much but as this CPU has a locked multiplier, it makes little difference. As a 1155 socket CPU it also opens up the possibility of buying this CPU now, and then upgrading to a stronger one (Ivy Bridge) in a year or so provided your motherboards' BIOS supports it.

Sorry to disappoint Amazon readers and reviewers but this Intel i3-2100 processor is only dual (2) core and not as advertised quad (4) core processor. It does have quad (4) hyperthreads but only two physical cores. Hyperthreads are very different to multi-cores when describing central processing units (CPU's) and there are big differences in the cost between 2, 4, 6 and multi-core processors.

I contacted Intel after I realised there was something wrong in this description of this and another CPU, it turns out that Intel describe the i3 processors as dual (2) core and not as described in the titles on the Amazon website as a quad (4) core processor. Quad (4) core processors are limited to the Intel i5 processor range, the Intel i3 range of processors contain dual (2) core and quad (4)hyper threads, where as the Intel i5 processor range is Quad (4) core with 8 hyper threads and Intel i7 is 6 or 8 core which are multi threaded processors.

I agree the price and processing power of this Intel i3-2100 processor and that of the i3-2120 are good for the price you pay, but the description of these processors claiming they are quad (4) core is factually wrong and very misleading their buyers into a false sense of purchasing processing power which is a misrepresentation under the sale of goods act which Trading Standards are now investigating.

I ordered this processor thinking that it's Quad-Core as Amazon described it. It became clear that it's Dual-Core when it arrived. Fortunately I didn't even open the box as "2 Core" is clearly shown on the box.

Belatedly I also note now that one of the Reviewers has pointed out this error but under time pressure I overlooked it. My main criteria for choosing the processor was (1) Quad-Core, and (2) SLAT (Second Level Address Translation which Intel calls Extended Page Table or EPT) feature. I trusted Amazon description on the first one (which turned out to be wrong) while Intel website confirmed the i3-2100 indeed supports SLAT. I wish I also checked the number of cores while at Intel website, but I now know that none of the i3 processors are Quad-Core after all, but only Dual-Core.

It's already on its way back to Amazon with Amazon's no quibble return policy which is re-assuring.

Sorry can't say much about the processor - as I didn't even open the box - but thought this experience will help other buyers avoid the same mishap particularly if Quad-Core is an essential feature for the purchase.

Why 5-star? I see no point in affecting the rating for the processor, i.e., it would be unfair to rate it otherwise since the wrong description has nothing to do with this Intel processor.

Hi all
I bought this processor (Core i3 2100) as I found myself unable to decide which AMD processr to upgrade to after my AMD Phenom II X2 545 (3.01Ghz) packed up.
After reading sevaral reviews I was impressed by the figures I was seeing. Computer Shopper gave this processor an overall score that was higher than a Phenom II X6 1090T (a LOT more expensive)!
I don't do a lot of image manipulation or video editing or anything like that so I decided I did not need a quad core chip. As long as my framerates on my fave games did not drop I was happy.
With a Radeon 5850 this processor rocks! This processor has 2 cores but also has Hyper Threading so appears in Windows as having 4 cores (bonus)
Even the built in graphics on the chip are quite a bit better than anything AMD boards offer built in on the mobo.
For a bottom of the range processor it ROCKS!
Purchased this processor with a Gigabyte Socket 1155 mobo (B3 revision/stepping)
Over all I would rate this processor 10 out of 10

Hope this helps
Cheers

Well, thought it was too good to be true. Advertised as a QUAD core but in actual fact is a 2 core.
Given to understand someone else has reported the description to Trading Standards.
Was looking for a Quad Core (as per the Google description)and wondered why the item seemed a bargain (NB. I know very little about P.Cs but took advice from someone who does)
Will I be recompensed due to the mis selling of this item, I don't think so.
BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU READ ON THE GOOGLE WEB SITE!
