Product Description

From the Inside Flap

Design methodology in architecture and design has changed significantly over the last ten years, taking on major significance. More than ever, graphic attributes are used in contemporary architecture. A number of these new design methods and applications emerged through the use of digital media, leading to a paradigm shift in the way we design.
BIS Publishers has already showcased these new design methods in a series of small books on form experiments in architecture and design, such as Folding Architecture and Supersurfaces (Vyzoviti) and Modular Structures(Agkatidis), but no comprehensive book on the topic had been published until now.

Inspiration: Contemporary Design Methods in Architecture is a comprehensive compilation of work samples and ideas on design and gestalt, illustrations and graphic configurations, textures and structures, as well as form and spatial development. This book features more than 800 examples of abstract compositions that relate to architectural design methods and principles. These methodologies find their ground in the work of contemporary architectural design practice, while still being highly applicable to other related creative fields. Inspiration showcases hundreds of examples, models, sketches, and renderings of abstract architectural design applications. In addition to this substantial body of visual work, the book also documents and details the generative process and production of these design creations.

"A fascinating book which shows how the application of non figurative, abstract spatial patterns need no longer be seen as a reductive design methodology. Instead, through a complex and richer use than ever before, these devices can be implemented throughout the three dimensional organisation of a project. A great reference book with many wonderful examples for architects, students and anybody interested in the profession."

A great reference for those (students and designers alike) who wish to delve into a deeper discussion about the oftentimes enigmatic design process and its inception.

The book covers a series of design exercises and examples that explore various conceptual techniques that range from spatial exploration to patterning and scripting, as well as present a quick overview of the historical and architectural context of such endeavors...the projects are all very well explained.

As an educator, I have to say that it may be a bit too sophisticated for foundations design, but I would highly recommend it for more advanced students and professionals.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Book! 24 April 2014
By nic - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This is an inspiring book full of so many beautiful design explorations that are imbued with spatial, architectural opportunities. The authors lead us from two to three-dimensional studies in a clear path, all of which provides the basis for an architectural education that can serve as a foundation for all design students.

As an instructor of both drawing and design studio classes at an architecture university, this book has helped me re-formulate certain aspects of the work the students are assigned and the results have been astounding. Implementing a number of these iterative processes in our coursework has helped strengthen the link between an initial design idea and the resulting three-dimensional explorations.

I highly recommend this book for practicing architects, instructors, and students alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Exploration of Foundation Work and Process 30 Oct. 2012
By C. Bowen - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
I am a foundation design coordinator for a large Architecture and Industrial Design Program. We are always seeking new ways of bringing foundation design education into the studios. I was able to review an early copy of this book and felt it deserved a good review on Amazon. The book goes through a series of abstract iterations in design control and exploration. Each chapter and section is prefaced with a well translated (from German) description of how the exercise exploration connects with the practice of Architecture. The book layers itself appropriately tying all of the projects together so students are able to critically think about their entire series of work and how it has developed.

I spoke to the author (who is very accessible) to gain some insight about a few of the projects we wanted to try in our studios. These projects transformed our student work in ways that I could not have imagined. Both our legacy faculty and newer faculty were able to quickly adapt and find their own interpretations of the projects without disconnecting from the main objectives. We were also able to play the delicate balancing game between analog and digital exploration. All in all a refreshing look at foundation design.

My advice is to take the book at the level and depth you want to. Foundation is an often touchy subject and each teacher/program has their own method. This book is great for interpretation and adaptation. It has generated excellent discussions among our faculty.
